(CNSNews.com) -- There were 664 homicides in Chicago in 2017 and, for comparison, 37 casualties in the U.S. military in its myriad operations around the globe. That's according to data from the Chicago Tribune and from the Department of Defense's press office.

The Chicago deaths are for the period Jan. 1, 2017 through Dec. 31, 2017; the military deaths are from Jan. 1, 2017 through Dec. 22, 2017, which is the latest update on casualties by the DoD posted so far. (There may have been a few more military casualties in December.)

From the data available, it shows that Chicago suffered 17.9 times more homicides than the U.S. military worldwide -- combat and non-combat related deaths -- last year.

For Chicago, 664 homicides -- murders by shooting or other means (not including suicides) -- averages to 1.8 homicides every day of the year.

For the U.S. military, some of the deaths were combat related and some were non-combat related.

Not even fair to war to call Chicago a war zone.

With the statues coming down, I would expect to see the inner cities be safer in the near future as well.

Why do democrat leaders in these cities not make stopping the slaughter of black people a top priority? Racists?

Message to Chicago youth:

Join the military. You can still shoot other people but you're less likely to die there than on the streets of Chicago.

Baton Rouge has more murders per capita than Chicago. Not sure why this forum is obsessed with Chicago.

It's more dangerous to walk through Chicago than it is to walk through a middle eastern warzone. That's fricked up.

OP is propaganda bullshite

The reason Chicago has so many deaths is because of all the guns flowing in from lower crime areas that have weak gun laws

Don't explain why those lower crime areas with those weak gun laws dont have the same problems. I am not smart.

I have spent the last few decades bouncing around the ME with the last 15 years in Saudi, people can not comprehend it when I try to explain how much safer it is here than in any major US city.

Well then, it's all good that 1.8 people die a day from homicide in chicago. As long as baton rouge has even worse ghetto dwellers, right?

Let's see, what are the common denominators here? Inner cities comprised mostly of black people. Cities under mostly democrat rule for decades. Nah, surely, there's no connection.

Let’s take a look even further into the numbers. Why are the murder rates so high in BR and Chicago.

I wonder if it has to do with black males that come from single parent homes where that single parent is the mother.

You can’t hide from the real numbers. A kid has a better shot in life if they have a mother and a father in the home. It’s not economic issues it’s a family unit issue.

We can’t really have a conversation about it because it paints (mostly) black Americans in a bad picture and we still use kid gloves because of slavery. It’s time for black leaders to make the black community accountable for their own actions and stop blaming others and/or “the system”.

Democrats have zero answers for inner city crime, other than pushing the police away and disarming the law abiding.

Inner city dwellers can keep voting 95% democrat and keep dying for all I care. People who are both stupid and hostile to solutions deserve no sympathy

Wait until the "Ferguson Effect" becomes common outside of St. Louis and Baltimore.
