Looking at getting my oldest (8yrs, 9 in Dec)his first deer rifle. He weighs about 90lbs if that makes a difference, but was looking at a youth .243. What did you get your kids for their first rifle?

That’s about the age and size my son got his first rifle. I went with a 7-08 and he still uses it. He hasn’t lost a deer with it yet. I love the caliber. My daughter has a .243 and also shoots his 7-08 now. The recoil isn’t noticeable.

I don’t have anything against a .243. I just prefer the 7-08 given we hunt in different states and terrain and different types of deer. I really wish I would’ve just bought him a .308 and used low recoil or make him suck it up

Mine will be getting a .260 because it’s what I started on and I still have it. He’s a little younger/smaller than yours and I hand load so he’ll be starting on some reduced loads.

If I didn’t have that gun I’d probably go .243, it’s what I shoot most of my deer with.

My first one was a 6.5x55 and that'll be my boys first one.

As much as it makes me want to gag, if I was going buy my kid a rifle it'd be a 6.5 Creedmoor. Basically the same thing as the x55 but with wayyyyyy better ammo selection. I've always been a 7mm-08 fan as well, but the abundant 6.5 ammo would tilt me to that. I'd just never admit it.

From what i read, the 7-08 is a ballistic twin of the old 7 x 57 Mauser. That was the #1 woods deer cartridge for a long time South & East U.S.

I built a 300 Blackout in AR platform and put a VX-5 2-10 scope for my then 9 YO. Now he has a 308 bolt gun and shoots Hornady Custom Lite ammo out of it so his younger sister can use the AR. The AR fit him better which helped teach proper sight alignment.

Bought my son a .308 when he was 8. First time shooting I put three reduced recoil rounds and one round out of my mag. I let him shoot without telling him a difference. He handled the full round with even noticing a difference. Gave the rest of the reduced recoil rounds away.

I got my son a .22 when he was 7. Cheap Rossi from Academy that he still loves. He killed a fricking hog with it last month.

If he’s almost 9, I’d go ahead and get him a 308 and be done with it. He’s only getting bigger and stronger from here on.

My son is 17 and still uses the 308 Savage Axis 2 with Accutrigger that he got when he was young.

I still shoot my youth .243, just with a longer butt pad now. That round will kill any deer in the southeast just fine.

Ruger compact .308 or 7mm08. I see absolutely no reason reason to shoot a .243 over the other 2 calibers. My daughter starting shooting the ruger .308 at 9 and my other at 8. Both are skinny and have never complained of the recoil. I actually shoot it a lot when hunting out of my climber bc of how compact it is. I tried the .243 of my oldest son when he was young and just not a fan. While we did kill several deer with it blood trails were always weak to non existent and they always ran a good ways. Not the case with the .308. It leaves a good hole and plenty of blood.

My son killed his first deer with my old 30-30 when he was 7. When he was 8 I bought him a .308 Weatherby Vanguard. The gun is very accurate and he has never flinched from recoil. I have always thought that when you are shooting at a deer, the excitement takes care of recoil. He is 24 now and still uses the same rifle.

Enjoy this time - it goes too fast!

Bought my son a Savage Axis youth model in 7mm-08 at your sons age and started him with the Hornady Reduced Recoil loads. Gun is extremely accurate and he's killed a pile of deer with the reduced recoil loads. He is going to be 13 this year and still loves his rifle.

7mm08 all day long. I bought my son a youth model 243 and immediately regretted it. 7mm08 is a way better choice.
