I use to do it all the time. Never could get them bled right though. Now I just spend the extra money and have it done

If you don't have ton of miles on your vehicle, there is a good chance you can get by with just new pads, which can be had for under $100 (premium set) for all corners. Not sure what type of vehicle you have, but pads are easy to change in my experience. I've got over 100k on my truck with the original rotors. I'll probably change them sometime this year whenever I get around to it.

Easy job. Usually saves about half the cost.

If you're just changing pads and rotors, why bleed the lines?

I always do my own. Hardly takes any time. I spend longer getting tools out than changing the pads.

To bleed them by yourself, get a length of tube and a clear jar. Put the tubing onto the bleeder valve and the other end into the jar. Fill jar with enough brake fluid to cover the end of the tube. Crack bleeder valve open, fill reservoir under hood and pump pedal. Start with rear pass side and work your way to the front driver.

I did mine on my Sequoia last August I think.

It only took a couple of hours. Pads could have been done in about an hour.

Did full pads & rotors, sway bar links, and all 4 struts and springs on my wife's car just recently. Ended up saving something like $1200 over what the Honda dealership quoted to do all of that, I have the ball joints sitting on my table to do soon too. The brakes alone took only a couple hours to do myself, if you have the tools and the means to do so I'd say it's very much worth your time to do yourself.

Willing to fix or try and fix a lot of things with my car. Brakes are not one of them. Call me whatever but I don’t trust myself

I did my truck a month ago and it took an hour start to finish to replace rear calipers, pads and rotors and to bleed them. After the wheels are off - its 2 bolts, maybe a third if you need some slack in the brake line to remove the rotors.

Why the hell would you bleed your brakes just to change pads and rotors?

no reason to bleed them if aren't doing anything to introduce air into the lines.

Why?

If you don't open up the lines, how would you get air in them?

Its good practice to do it at a pad change because that's the only time most people will mess with it. Brake fluid is suppose to be changed every two years by most recommendations. At least bleeding will help flush the nastiest stuff out. I bleed until the fluid coming out is clear. It doesn't take long and brake fluid is cheap.

Disc brakes and rotors are really easy to change. My suggestion is to watch a youtube video and if it is something you think that you could do go for it.
