Apparently one of the things they wanted to have the wolves for was to keep the elk in the mountains a little more and make them harder targets for the hunters, to keep the population up.

So you are suggesting that a species that is being described as an apex predator can hinge its very existence on another species, man.

Hmm.

Now, no one questioned what has happened with the wolf populations. I do question, what needful, functional role does this particular species fill.

Read "Where the Wild Things Were" for some insight on the reasons why apex predators are needed. LINK

And I really don't think man fills the niche of top predator very well. Man targets trophy animals, while wolves prey on the weak (young, old, injured, etc.). Could lead to an imbalanced population demographic. Also, as someone already mentioned, wolves control the mesocarnivores, which is of ecological importance for other prey species.

I guess you mean that we shouldn't wipe out all the apex predators?

Oh wait, I think you mean we should wipe out the apex predators, but THEN not frick with nature by reintroducing them.

That can't possibly be what you mean.

I seriously you are going to get that dude do do any reading. Sounds like he has his mind made up listening to a lot of folks who don't know much about the subject.

There is available info from people who know a helluva lot more than us, but you can't convince people who think they know it all. Usually between two extremes you find the truth, his position is certainly one extreme.

GF has a pet wolf.

Thing is the most obedient animal I have been around. (Only to the master though)

Thing is huge, the summers do work on its coat but still beautiful.
