I sold guns for a gun shop for a number of years after I retired and I’m not sure which is the best Remington 700, Tikka, Winchester Browning and I could throw in a few others all have good action. I am sure that the Remington 770 has the worst action and it ain’t close. It’s a price point gun and many folks bought it as their entry level gun because it was cheap. I did my best to try to talk people out of buying but all they could see was the price. I will add that many people who bought the 770 probably didn’t have the money to spend much more and it would kill a deer.

I just polish my own down until they are smooth. Just finished a Rem 700 platform chambered in 6.5 Creedmore. Added a Night Force scope, Woox wooden stock furniture, a custom Bob Sachlis trigger, Volquartsen barrel and muzzle brake. Awesome shooter so far.

I have an old 700 ADL from the 80's, and it is really smooth.

I have a Ruger that's amazingly smooth.

For bolt actions- I have a savage and a ruger, the savage is 10x smoother. It's also 20 years older, and they don't make things like they used to, so my comparison may be invalid.

My boy has a Weatherby Vanguard (Howa made) that is smooth and extremely accurate.
Definitely didn't realize Howa and Weatherby were the same company or whatever. Some solid rifle and scope threads these past few days. All we now is a shotgun thread.

Volquartsen barrel
When did Volquartsen start making barrels in anything other than rimfire?

I have a very old Howa 1500(30 years old) it has the smoothest bolt action movement of any rifle i have ever shot.
I would also highly recommend a Bergara B-14

I think Howa just makes the Vanguard series for Weatherby so that the poors (like me) can say they have a Weatherby. Ours is made in Japan.
That said, I bought my son’s used that was traded in at a local gun store It was topped with an old Leupold VX1 3-9 x 40. Gave like $400 for it and didn’t have to touch the scope. Whoever traded it in is a nut…son is a killing machine with it.

Makes sense. I haven't looked at any in person yet but I like the vanguard from just researching. Guess it's sort of like Fender electric guitars, the Japanese ones are badass. I'm gonna hit the gun shops before I buy anything and check for any trade ins like that, but during deer season there probably isn't much.

Correct. They're extremely well made rifles. The triggers are fantastic. Ill have another one soon

I knew nothing about the rifle before I bought it. Took a chance on it and it worked out.
I’ve tried to swindle him into trading it for some of my other stuff and it’s a no-go….he’s still young and will get the itch for something different soon enough - then it’ll be mine.
He’ll get it back when I die.

Ruger M77 action will be forever hard to beat for a smooth, stable, clean action.

I second the old Colt Sauers, but a very close second are the Steyrs. The Model M,S,and L's were very smooth.
