I know every boat & engine is different. And obviously speed is a big factor.

So I'm asking what's the best gas mileage your motor can deliver when you're running at the speed that's most fuel efficient for your rig. (Not counting idle speed).

My 250 Pro XS two-stroke gets 6 miles per gallon at any speed between 25 and 50 mph. That's with a full fishing load, only me in the boat, 36 gallons of fuel, on a 21 ft. Bullet XRD.

Does a Merc Monitor tell you this? I have never bothered to look.

My old 2 smoke Johnson Fast Strike V6 measure gallons per mile.

Not sure exactly how much, but it guzzles it.

Mercury has more monitors than I can keep up with. Smart Craft gauges have been around for a long time - Vessel View (and maybe some others) is newer. I'm not sure what Merc Monitor is/does.

I have Smart Craft Gauge on my boat. I can toggle among water pressure, water temp, fuel consumption, battery voltage, and a couple more. There is one "field" that shows current gallons/hour and total gallons burned since last reset.

While running you can quickly calculate MPG. This morning, for example, my GPS showed 47 MPH and my smart craft gauge showed 7.9 miles/gallon. Which is pretty much 6 mpg.

Mine is extremely accurate - whenever I fill the tank the total is almost always within 2-3 tenths of a gallon compared to what the Smart Craft shows as total fuel burned (unless the boat has been sitting up for a while, in which case evaporation is occurring but not being accounted for).

I started the thread because I'm wondering if the 4-strokes (assuming same boat, same prop, same load, etc.) will get fuel mileage equal to the two- strokes. I have a 36 gallon tank, so it's not like I'm gonna run out - just curious.

I'm hoping to see someone post mileage after changing from 2-stroke to 4-stroke.

Just from reading multiple threads on this elsewhere, the consensus seems to be slightly better mpg from the optis, but not enough to be significant.

I'll take small decrease in has mileage in exchange for the features that make the 4-stroke so good.

One dealer had told me the Pro SX 250 will get better mileage than the 2-stroke Pro VS 250. That would be a nice surorise. I'm hoping he's not exaggerating/distorting the other good & bad.

Rumor has it that parts will be a problem for 2-strokes before too long. If not for that, I'd be willing to run my Optimax until it just gives up the ghost. With only 350 hours on my Optimax, it'll probably outlive me.

Fishing is an expensive hobby - a slightly less efficient engine isn't doing to make me stick with a 2-stoke. I'm really not expecting equal or better quality with a 4-stroke simply because this Optimax is so efficient.

If the gas mileage were any better on my 2-stroke, I'd have to stop every half hour and drain some fuel.

Id run the optimax till it spit pieces out. I have a hard time believing parts will be a serious problem anytime soon with how many are out there. They are great engines for going fast.

Buttttt I know you already ordered a 4 stroke so whatcha want for the opti?

Eta: I think optimax was the epitome of cost vs performance in outboards. They sip fuel, hold up well, didn't cost too much, didn't weigh too much. They just blow the frick apart sometimes, but they are great in the whole spectrum of outboard power

Was watching a Florida Keys fishing show this morning. Didn't catch the boat size but it was powered by 3 400HP Mercs. At the end of the show they give the breakdown and they went 163 miles on 154 gallons with average speed of 37mph.

Actually not that bad.

In my 20ft Wellcraft with a 150 Yamaha VMAX carbed two stroke V6, I get about 3.4 miles per gallon cruising at 30mph turning 3600rpm. That's about 8.6 gallons per hour

Here's the head scratcher. My other boat and motor, a 20ft flat with a 3 cylinder 85hp carbed 2 stroke gets the same fuel mileage as the 20ft with the V6. About 3 mpg running 3500rpm going about 26mph

The dealer said they usually go for $10k (sometimes more, depending on overall condition).

Torque, hole shot (which is already fine with my setup), fuel efficiency (remains to be seen) and not having to add oil to the reservoir. They also claim greater speed (which I hardly need. We clocked mine at 83 with a full fishing load when we were testing props).

The biggest items for me are the digital shift & throttle. I'm still going to physical therapy twice a week for my shoulder replacement. They had to do what's called a reverse replacement, and I don't yet have (may never have) the range of motion I had. Digital shifting is supposed to be much easier than the cable system I have now.

Big bay boat with 250 HPDI. Best I get is 3.1 but that’s too slow usually. I get 2.7 most trips.
