They sip fuel,...
Now granted, a 21' Bullet is lighter than a lot of boats (1300 pounds dry weight). But the Optimax is still a big part of the equation.

Torque, hole shot (which is already fine with my setup), fuel efficiency (remains to be seen) and not having to add oil to the reservoir. They also claim greater speed (which I hardly need. We clocked mine at 83 with a full fishing load when we were testing props).

depends on load and seas
single df300
light load / good seas 2.5mpg
divin gear / bumpy seas 2.0mpg

Haven't talked props much. The dealer said he always recommends trying the existing prop when people re-power. He said it may or may not do well. Depending on how it runs we can decide on what changes (height, pitch, diameter, vents, etc.) to try.
I also plan to call the folks at the Bullet factory and get their opinion. Those guys fish a lot and race a lot. They'll have a good "starting point" for a new prop. They sell a lot of this model, so they'll know what to try, and they have always been good about taking (or returning) my calls.

You’re stroking it too hard

23' Bay boat with a F300. Saturday with just me and the wife on the river, light load 3.1 mpg at cruise speed. Repowered from an HPDI 250 on same boat and never saw better than 2 mpg at cruise. I gained (on average) 1 mpg when going to the 4 stroke. I was hoping it would be a little better than that but it wasn't.

What I am reading is, the new lower unit results in lower slip, so lower pitch is required.

Which lower unit is this ? I think the lower unit on my 2-stroke was called the Torque Master.
I've heard of Wing Master, Torque Master II and Speed Master. I can't keep up with all their stuff - pretty sure the Speed Master has/had the pointed nosecone to prevent blowouts.
eta: Left out Sport Master

22’ Bluewave w/ 200 Zuke 4.6 mpg and that’s cruising around 35-37.

Happy for anything over 2 mpg, ally 2003,280 merc ros

Can get 3 mpg if I take it easy

Torque master is the lower on the xs, sport master is the pointy one with the low water pickup for high speed. Wing master is a pump shotgun, speed master is a semi auto 22.

Mercury did make a gear case called speed master back in the day.

And as you later noted, they made a Speed Master.
And they made a Wing Master. LINK
And I believe they also made a Fleet Master.(Not that anybody cares.)
My point was that I can't keep up with all the variations.

Well I'm out of this conversation. I have 6 mercury V12's and they are running about .5 mpg.

The Torque Master has seen some design changes over the years.

I had a Johnson Ocean Pro on a 22' C-Hawk Sportcabin and averaged about 2 mpg and ran less than 4000 RPM. I think it was a 2000 model IIRC. Thing did have 6 carburetors on it though.
