They do need revenue no denying that. They are making it off of non residents that seem happy to pay it for hunting privileges.Thats based on the out of state license plates that I see from November to January.
A lot of locals don’t like it but I’m of the opinion that they are spending their money here so it’s a win.

In the brush out to about 80 yards I'd use my old school Remington 870 12 gauge pump gun with the slug barrel and open sights. Its 3" magnum but even 2-3/4" shells get it done. It's nice and short, shoulders like butter, and deadly. There is nothing like staring a deer in the face in the brush on the ground from 20 yards at eye level from over the sights and letting one fly. I took one out in mid air while jumping a fence years ago with this gun from 40 yards.
There are lots of states/areas where this is still basically all you can gun hunt deer with and it just plain works. I'd say the 12 gauge has taken more deer than any rifle.

Lord knows it seems like it but outside of SW MS there really are not that many OOS hunters and there really are far less than there used to be.
Increase in the LA deer herd combined with the camping ban in the National Forest put a big dent in it.
30 years ago every road in SW MS looked like it was lined up for a parade opening weekend with Liberty Road being a special kind of shite show.

I remember those days well. My dad and I hunted in Gloster for years. We would go to Vines for lunch and it was a parking lot of La vehicles.

Bull fricking shite, what does primitive weapon season have to do with managing herd size? And like the point I made earlier especially if you are going to allow “weapon of choice” “with appropriate license” it is another money grab, and it it ain’t the $15 license they are going after it is the non resident $75 add on that they are looking for, if it were about herd management why not go to a tagging system , open the season from November to January and let you use anything you want to kill them with???? Because that can make more money with all the sub seasons and licenses

The good thing is that they aren’t forcing anyone to pay it. They are saying hey you are welcome to hunt here but this is what it cost. If folks weren’t paying it they would lower the fees.

Completely agree and not arguing that, but to say it is not to increase revenue is ignoring the obvious

They are attempting to increase effort and take without completely doing away with primitive weapon which is a tradition that many people still like, MDWFP is a public agency and does not exist in a vacuum.
No one wants to diddle with bow season nor stretch gun season into the gestation period and the residents by and large accept what they did as a compromise and it is easily reversible when management dictates it need be.
Sounds like you should just stay away and stop supporting it as it is not being managed to your liking, not sure how the state will survive without your $75 but good riddance to you.

Now you are changing your story , earlier when we were discussing primitive weapon season you said it was all about herd management, now it is a compromise and preserving an activity, make up your mind
And like I have said previously, I understand that these are the rules, play by them or don’t hunt, and I am fine with that, but don’t think for a second that primitive weapon season is designed to manage the herd size

Of course 30-30 is the best heavy cover rifle. This is what I have and I hunt heavy timber.
Rifle
30-06 180 grain hornady sst (Tikka with leopold v6)
308 150 grain hornady American hunter (Tikka with leopold v6)
( if I can see more than 100 yards)
Primitive riflle
35 wheelen (traditions with Nikon monarch)
Both the 35 and 30-06 drop em! I’ve never had a deer runoff with those guns/ammo

My lord you are obtuse.
It is a compromise between going full season gun with no primitive weapon and no change with the express purpose of increasing effort and take for herd management purposes.
This was plainly stated by MDWFP at the time as either sex full season was not having enough of an impact or slowing the population explosion.
Not sure where you hunt in MS but we have a deer problem, so bad in fact I can not keep them out of my fields despite electric fences and chemical repellents and it is getting worse year by year.

I can’t keep them from running in front of me while driving to work and back. It’s normal to see 25-30 between my house Liberty each morning. I wish I could see them in the stand ...pew pew

Build a trailer park somewhere nearby. That what happened to my hunting grounds. With the 50 white trash shooting off their porches at night the deer pop has significantly decreased.
