The only way deer die is if they are shot with something 180gr or more moving 3350fps or more!! And if your not willing to spend 2200$ on the scope don’t leave the house.
However, if you know you won’t be shooting past 100yd a good ol 30-30 with a low power variable scope is a good choice. At least for me it is.

35 Whelen is a great weapon, period. If you hunt in a state that has a "primitive weapon" season, you should own one.

I was actually leaning towards going this route, those color case hardened 1886s are beautiful

416 Rigby is the minimum I would consider for heavy timber, though I would feel a little more comfortable with a 470 Nitro Express.

the same weapon you use in open country or any normal hunting situation IF you can shoot straight ethically, anyone who uses a different rifle than they are accustom to OR uses a heavier bullet cuz it can "bust through brush" is unethical, go to the range and practice...

.50 BMG with APIT rounds. That tungsten core doesn't care if there's a tree in the way.

I use .30-30, .35, or .45-70 for this task interchangeably, just depending on which I feel like, they were all my Grandfathers and I enjoy shooting them.

I agree with what you’re saying, however this isn’t for “shooting into brush”, it’s for being able to get an ethical shot off quickly in a situation where you may only have a couple of moments to take a shot.

I would say buckshot or a slug. From a shotgun.
Next would be a 30-30,
This gun has killed the most whitetail in the USA.

.30-30 is easy to beat. Several that are better performers in a similar style, fast handling rifle. 35 REM, 358 WIN, 375 WIN, .38-55 WIN, and 444 all come to mind. A .308 or 7mm-08 in a short action bolt or lever would be nice, also.
For years, I thought about getting a .358 WIN in Browning BLR for a woods rifle. What I have used for years, with good results, is a Weatherby Ultralight 257 magnum. Great handling rifle. And, no, the bullets don’t blow up at 30 yards.

If you told me I was allowed one rifle for the rest of my life it would be my Marlin chambered in .35 Remington, it shoots like an extension of my body, as fluid and fast as pointing your finger.

Dad has had the Remington Model 8 in a 35 REM for years. LINK
The balance is amazing. It’s built on a John Browning patent and has the Auto 5 hump. It naturally comes to your shoulder. Only downside is it wasn’t built to take a scope. Amazing semi auto rifle.

I'm jealous, sounds like a great gun to shoot and I would never dream of scoping it anyway.

Rifles were so much better when they were designed for shooting rather than looks and John Moses Browning damn well knew how to design a gun for utility which makes the below quote even better.
