Looking at trucks 5-10 yrs old.

5.3 v8 Chevy/GMC
2.7L Ecoboost
3.5L Ecoboost
5.0 Ford
5.7L Hemi
5.7L Toyota
What others should I consider?

Ive had a 5.3 v8 in a Suburban and it ran well

This truck will be mainly used as a grocery getter and light/medium towing vehicle since I sold my camper and probably selling my V10 Ford. I don’t want to go to a Tacoma size just yet

Have had multiples of each. Not one single problem. Both had all the power I ever needed. I felt the Ram supplied it better than the GM.

6.2L V8 in GM pickups is what I’d recommend…

I'd recommend knowing where all of your gas stations are. Because you will never pass one without stopping at it.

I recommend the 3.0 Duramax. I went from a 6.2 V8 to the 3.0 Duramax and couldn't be happier.

If I had to rank the engines I have/have had/have driven:

3.0 Duramax (GM)
5.3 V8 (GM)
3.5 V6 Ecoboost (Ford)
6.2 V8 (GM)
5.0 V8 (Ford)

Haha! I have a Ford 6.8L v10 now. Tell me about it. Not really concerned about gas mileage though. Will probably only put 5-6k per year on it

When I traded my 6.2 V8 in for my 3.0 Duramax the overall MPG for the 6.2 was 13, IIRC.

I had a couple of flawless 5.3s but I was the minority there. In the 2014-2019 window, the Toyota is the most reliable engine. The gas mileage is terrible, but all the reliable v8s get terrible mileage. The magic gas mileage gremlins they install are what make them unreliable.

Ford is recalling 90-100K vehicles with Ecoboost 2.7 and 3.0 engines. Many in F-150’s.

I’m in the same market, and I’m going with the old school 8 cylinder engine in one of the Big 3, now my research is focused on some of the shite transmissions to avoid.

I have a 2016 2.7 Ecoboost in my F-150. I have not had a lick of trouble with this engine at all. I get a bit better than 20 miles per gallon, and it tows my bay boat effortlessly. Even though the engine is what most people would consider to be small, it has a high towing capacity. Great engine.

2.7eco bone stock blows the doors off a Chevy 5.3 and gets way better fuel economy than all of them. Tune the 2.7 for $600 and it is now faster than the 6.2 Chevy and 5.7s. If you want to go fast, with a slight fuel mileage penalty, go 3.5eco.

Appears it was a substandard material used when they were flying out the door during and immediately post-Covid. Your 2016 wouldn’t have been in that number.

Not really had an issue with my 2018 2.7 Ecoboost. Had to change the exhaust gas recirculation line that cracked which made it sound like a go cart with no muffler for a day, but that's the only issue in almost 150k miles. And that was likely due to physical damage from debris driving the interstate everyday. Would recommend if you need fuel efficiency and a truck bed. Towing...different story.

For what you are looking there is one answer.

The 5.7 Yota, everything else is way down the list.

After that I would personally go the 5.0 or Hemi.

My only complaint with AFM GM V8s and Hemis is their lifter failures.
If they could fix that, they could arguably be some of the most reliable V8 being produced.

If I had to choose from that line up it would either be 5.7 yota or 5.0 Ford.
If an option was an AFM deleted 5.3 GM, I would go with it.

Best truck I've ever owned is a 2004 Avalanch with the 5.3 V8 Vortec. Still have it to this day.

The pre AFM 5.3s with the older 6 speeds. Say 2000-2003 and pre were reliable as hell. Up there with the Yota.

I have a 2014 F150 with the 5.0 V8 with 250,000 miles it. I’ve went through 1 starter and that’s it. I also DO NOT keep my vehicles clean nor baby them. It’s a truck and I use it as a truck.

Now it may break down on me this evening but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a truck with that engine.

All of those motors have been in circulation for a while. I'm sure there are issues with any. Ive had a 5.3 for a while no issues. Have a '21 2.7 now and I love it. In town with a 33" at tire I'm getting 22mpg with a lot of power. Thing really surprised me.
