Depends on where you live. Around shreveport, most people have access to great bass lakes where anyone with a boat can access giant largemouths.
Most people around here dont have that same access to 150" bucks.

Bass fishing, fishing in general.

I turned to a hunting channel for the first time in months and Jason Aldean shot a deer in the lumbar spine with a crossbow within 5 seconds of me watching.

Killing a mature buck on heavily pressured public land is extremely difficult. So is catching a big bass on heavily pressured public water. So many variables.

That's because he and the rest of the BC crew are friggen clowns.

Shame on you stating catching trash fish over real fish.

Id say bass is easier.
Take a novice angler and give them a week on Toledo bend and they would have a better chance at a trophy bass
Take a novice hunter and give them a week on public land in Kansas or another big buck area and they may never even see a shooter

I did both for many years. Now, it is a lot easy for me to deer hunt then just to fish all together.

It really depends on the area that you are doing either activity.

how much of that is from lack of skill instead of just chance?

Having done both m a lot, fishing is harder. You can get so many signs for deer that you can see. Scat, prints, rubbings, etc. It is not hard to find deer sign and setup in an area and wait them out. With bass, there are not many signs. You have to look at ever changing conditions. Water temp, clarity, fishing depth, moon phases, bait selection, bait color, on and on. There are just so many variables you need to consider. Fishing is really hard compared to hunting. Hunting is like playing checkers, fishing is like playing chess.

Way to many variables to decide.
Private lake vs properly managed hunting land? \
bow hunting is harder than rifle hunting and both are more respectable than crossbow hunting
I think the overall work that goes into killing a mature buck is much more than fishing. It's scouting in the spring, trimming in the summer, planting early fall, patterning, wind, etc.
Both can luck up and bag the trophy but that much prep doesn't go into fishing

Bow fishing is relatively easy.
So I say catching a deer on traditional rod and reel requires more skill.

Im sure hooking onto a 10+lb bass has got to be the thrill of a lifetime and I wouldn't know because Im ignorant and Ive never caught one anywhere near that size. But, I don't see how that can ever compete with the adrenaline you get from a trophy buck coming on you, ESPECIALLY one you've scouted and hunted for a long time, when you are sitting in the freezing cold with a bow in your hand and have to put an arrow through the vitals. I know so much knowledge, time and experience goes into being a true fisherman, but I don't see how it can take more skill to catch fish than it is to get within bow range (on purpose) of an extremely aware animal and then make the shot.

i think back in the day when there were no trail cams, no sonar was the real deal. For deer hunting you had to basically live in the woods tracking and setting up your location and do it on public land.. No fence no private property and to consistently bag big bucks when everyone else struggled. thats hunting.
Same with fishing. No one to steal waypoints from, trying to read depth contours with a flashing and consistently catch the big ones.
I think its pretty even back then. Now with trail cams, sonar, private fenced in areas, food plots, etc. just doesn't seem like "hunting" anymore.
I'd say bass only because you can't really see them. Even with sonar not too many can actually say that its a bass they see.

Bass fishing. Deer hunting requires patience. Bass fishing requires skill.

These two are my primary outdoor activities. I will say that bass fishing requires a lot more time to be good. Lure presentation, learning multiple techniques, boat control, reading the conditions, etc.... there are a lot more variables in bass fishing. Deer hunting can be just as tough but playing the wind and controlling scent and noise go a long way towards putting the odds in your favor.
It all depends on the area obviously, odds of killing a 150+ buck where I live are pretty low and odds of catching a 10+ bass are probably better than some areas on a lot of the lakes I fish.
Both require some skill but I would say Bass fishing would require more.
