I've been asked this at least once a day since the school massacre, by the commies that I know up here. I tried giving them a reasonable response for like a month; fun to shoot, hunting, zombies, keeping the government in check, but they aren't satisfied with those answers and the commies tell me that "you don't need an assault rifle for hunting" blah blah blah. So, the last couple of days I've just given up and told them that I need an "assault" rifle for when the South rises again, and I'll be able to open up a can of whoop arse long before my brethren make it this far north, and have the way prepared so to speak.

That's shut them up so far.

Bapple, Your points are all very true and should always be a part of the argument. In addition, I like to also recognize the fact that MANY folks, myself included, buy guns for recreational shooting. Unfortunately, the attitude in America towards gun ownership has changed from one of recognizing a constitutional right to own guns to one of having to PROVE to non-shooters WHY we NEED a particular gun or a certain number of guns. Like a prior poster, I also make an analogy to vehicles. Does anyone need a car that can exceed the speed limit? Of course not. But very few drivers don't exceed the speed limit at least every now and then.

In addition to the usual reasons to own guns, I explain that I enjoy shooting many types of guns. Although I don't own any guns that would fall into the "assault weapon" category, I certainly recognize, and support, the rights of Americans to own whatever guns they can legally own.

I tell them I don't. I don't need a car that goes over 100, don't need to drink, smoke, etc.

Neither do you, but I respect your right to own a car that goes that fast, and your right to drink and smoke if you choose.

I don't need one. May not want one but I prefer liberty to perceived security of laws and our rights are more important than faux security.

an old re-hash, but....

Bad guys...

...who steal

...and then gang up to try and kill me...

So I can save my arse, requiring that I shoot the frick out of them before they shoot me (back glass blown out)

...and get back a bunch of shite they stole from me and other people.

...any problem with that?

...and feel free to share these pics with any candy-arse anti-gun zealot who asserts "why does anyone need such a weapon anyway?"

fricking media doesn't cover shite. Really pisses me off.

Because it's a -responsibility- I understand, accept AND owe the founding forefathers AND each man and woman that has died so I could live free.

I realize I'm willing to die for freedom.

Guns are fun? Sure! But I didn't spend this much damn money for a few trips to a range.

I say that assault rifles are full auto -- machine guns. That's what the military and police use. Those are already illegal for all intents and purposes.

I say that semi-automatic rifles like the AR15, M1A, FAL, AK47, Mini-14 and the SKS are for defense. Defense of my home, my family, my liberty.

My land, my town, my county, my state, and by God my country. We are all minutemen. We are all responsible for protecting ourselves and our families. From whatever may come.

If libs want defend their families with their cellphone and a baseball bat then so be it (like bringing a knife to a gunfight but I digress). I choose a more immediate and decisive method.

I could honestly say they're fun to shoot, and useful for protecting livestock, or as you noted for shooting hogs (never done it but saw it on TV). But those reasons alone aren't compelling enough and tend to shift the focus of the discussion away from the true purpose of the 2nd Amendment, which has F*** all to do with hunting and target shooting.

Lib: why do you need that assault weapon?

Me: Why don't you think I need one?

Lib: Well, bec...

Me: IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK.

It's not the "Bill of Needs", the document was written to ensure Americas freedom through the use of political checks and balances and when that fails there's the 2nd ammendment, hunting was a way to survive when the constitution was written, making the 2nd about hunting would be like writting a law that says you have a RIGHT to go to kfc and order the #3 with a large coke.

What most people don't know is that the 2nd Amendment didn't create the right to bear arms, it confirmed and carried over an English law from the 12th or 13th century that gave the people the right to keep their own weapons instead of the government having all the weapons.

Oh, and this
