What is your response when asked "why do you want/need an "assault rifle"

Besides the obvious they're a blast shoot and it's a great gun for shooting hogs.

That is the main reason.
Other reason can be that citizens are armed to prevent a government tyranny (not saying it will happen, but its a reason)

I tell them it's not an assault rifle. It's a high powered military styled weapon of death. Most high powered gun in the world. America frick yeah.

That guy who did the interview in WV last night said it best.
Why do police have assault rifles? Avg response time is 4 minutes and the same people come after me first. Why can't I have them then? It is the same criminals armed with the exact same weapons so why do I have to wait for the Police to get there to protect myself? They have no obligation to protect anyone

Yep. This is #1 because most think they are machine guns.
#2 is that a minute fraction of crimes are perpetuated with rifles, period.
#3 is that it's a damn fine weapon for self defense and I prefer to stack the odds in my favor if I were to ever be victimized.
