It's just something the small-brains in the gun nut culture do. Most can't really think for themselves. They see another one do it, so they do. Most don't even know where the terms came from in the first place.

Ahhh...technical ignorance, the life blood of those who believe in "reasonable" and "common sense" gun control. The same people who whine about why there is a distinction to be made between clips and magazines are the same who whine about gun manufacturers violating the "spirit" of poorly written and ineffective laws.
