re: What is the deal with the outrage over using "clip" instead of "magazine"

The clip/mag thing is so often the straw that breaks the camel's back. It's a definitive litmus test differentiating between the informed vs uninformed at the most basic level.
But this board and TD as a whole seems to flip out when someone calls a magazine a "clip".

I know industrial machinist that will not respond to someone asking about a "drill" It is either a drill motor or a drill bit. @ different things but are used together

It's a popular term, yet here it seems to be cringe worthy.
It's a popular belief among the ignorant that Napoleon died at Waterloo. It's still wrong. The fact that a lot if people erroneously believe it doesn't change that.

Each term is interchangeable, but this board hates the term clip. It's funny.
No, no they aren't.

lol.
That's why I asked.
I (meaning me) get the difference. But many people do thing the terms are interchangeable. If someone says "It holds seven in the clip" you know what they are talking about.
It's funny that this isn't acceptable but backwoods slang terms for other everyday items are.
In other talk. What is a good gun if I want to get into targetr shooting? A larger size .22? I have a small Beretta .22 but the sights kinda stink on it. My everyday gun is a .38 revolver.
I'm thinking about getting a smaller gun to conceal but with more power than the .22 and then a target practice gun.
I still want something big and bad-arse but doubt I will vener need it.
Also another off topic question. Why is it wrong to use a gun to make someone stand down?
I hear on here if you are going to pull a gun make sure you are going to use it. Well if that was the case I would have been killed by the police before.
I think a gun can be used to control a person into standing down. I ask this because last year an aggressive road rager came to my window wanting to fight and I pointed a gun at him and was told this was wrong. Just curious.

Usually young guys that dont know a lot about guns try and jump on the clip vs magazine argument. They see a chance to try and correct someone and make themselves look like they are knowledgeable. I guarantee I own more guns than most on this site and probably more knowledgeable than most and I use the word clip, always have always will. Its not wrong when people know what you are talking about when you use the word.

The hell it isn't wrong.
My 1893 Mauser uses 5 round stripper clips. Most guns do not, especially not popular modern designs like the Glock. It's simply wrong and it's ignorant people who don't understand the difference who say clip when it isn't correct (well, also the intellectually lazy, I suppose).
Things should be called by their true names. No one has to be an arse about correcting people who get it wrong but a clip is not a magazine is not a clip.

well do something about it boss. maybe start a petetion? If everybody knows what you are talking about when you use a word, then sounds like its your problem?

It doesn't bother me.
It's the Internet though. Just like people on the OT shite all over when someone posts something that has been previously posted. Or on the Rant when people spell Shepherd and Sheppard wrong.

I agree with you that those two terms have been "accepted" to be interchangeable in this day and age and I also admit that I have and will likely continue to use them incorrectly.
However, this does not change the fact that it is simply incorrect.
As Coastie stated:
quote:
It's a definitive litmus test differentiating between the informed vs uninformed at the most basic level.
So when the Liberal Pundits climb on their ivory towers and begin to preach to me their ideology on the subject at hand, I immediately lose all sense of respect for them knowing that they are trying to present themselves as knowing more than I do about something yet in reality they don't even understand the basics of what it is they are spewing rhetoric about.
Please see this example here... How can ANY educated and informed citizen take this woman seriously?
quote:
Rep. DeGette is the lead sponsor of a bill that would ban high-capacity magazines and stated that “they’re bullets, so the people who have those now they’re going to shoot them, so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won’t be any more available.”
DeGette spokeswoman Juliet Johnson has now said the senior congresswoman from Denver “misspoke” and then issued another erroneous statement about guns.
“The congresswoman has been working on a high-capacity assault magazine ban for years and has been deeply involved in the issue; she simply misspoke in referring to ‘magazines’ when she should have referred to ‘clips,’ which cannot be reused because they don’t have a feeding mechanism,” Johnson said.
Actually, clips in most guns can be reused as well.
Immediately after DeGette’s Tuesday remark, the audience in The Post building chuckled and Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith, who was also on the panel, urged people who have not shot a gun to “get to the facts. … Let’s be educated as we make this decision.”

I searched for "clips" for a 10/22 I own. Several websites listed them as "clips". Guess they are wrong too
