What is fair market value of a south Texas trophy hunt?

I donated money to my son's school via their annual auction for a trophy hunt in south Texas. I was not provided with the fair market value of the hunt. Any clue who determines this? I am working on my taxes for 2016...ha

Whitetail deer hunt? I’d think somewhere in $3000-4000 range minimum. Did they give the name of the guide/outfitter service? Some of them have pricing info posted online.

Whitetail deer hunt?
the outfitter is just another parent at the school that has a managed ranch down there.

I think it depends greatly on success and size of the trophy. I’d say $2-4k for hunt but trophy fees can get very expensive. Normally around $10k up to $25k the closer you get to giant deer. I know a doe killed on a ranch by an oilfield hand fetched $10k recently and because it was July the assumption was she was pregnant with twins so that cost them another $20k.

1. That much on a DOE? Holy shite
2. How were they hunting whitetails in July since that should be closed season?

I know several guys that guide around south Texas. I believe a pretty standard low or high fence hunt is gonna run you $2,500-$3,000 for a deer scoring up to about 130 and about $100 an inch for anything above that.

It was hit by a truck.

Depends on if meals / lodging and size of buck. I took my daughter on hunt in 2016. Lodging/ meals provided for 4 of us. 120 in 10 pt. Does/ hogs/ fishing included. I paid 2k. Middle of road prices for similar fully outfitted hunt would be
Buck up to 129’. $1400
130-139. $2000
140-149. $2750
150-169. $5000
170-189. $6500
190-209. $8000
210-219. $9500
FYI. These prices were straight from outfitter Cody Malone’s ad. He seems to be middle of road. Lots of hunts can be had for less / more $$

And they charged the driver $30k? I find that hard to believe and question the legality of it. Sucks for them if true though!

Ask said parent

If it is a parent that isn’t a guide. I would say that the hunt had marginal fair market value. Lodging and meals included? I would think you slap down 1250 in the valuation and deduct the amount over. If questioned you can easily defend why it was valued low

I'm sure they sued the service company he works for. He was probably checking wells, I doubt he was there on a company retreat.

It didn't involve a suit, but could have... They were getting ready to frack, and the roads have a posted 15mph speed limit. She was found with trauma from a vehicle collision still warm and they have a gate log of all vehicle entering the property. It was pretty obvious, it took 2 phone calls and the amount was agreed upon quickly.

Not unreasonable...

Bagged and Tagged
Grayson County game wardens were tipped off about a white-tailed deer that was shot with a firearm in an archery-only county in November 2016. The wardens confronted the individual at his home and questioned him about the big buck. The subject eventually admitted he killed the deer with a pistol, after several shots, and then tagged the deer as being harvested in Fannin County. The deer was seized and several citations were issued. The cases are pending. The deer scored over 177 inches under the Boone & Crockett scoring system, netting a civil restitution value of over $10,000.

This is absolutely ridiculous. I am not saying it's not true, but it is totally ridiculous.

Browsing Exotic Hunting In Texas page on Facebook should give you a real good idea.

realistic about 1500-2000. For tax reporting purposes, easily $15k

I couldn't tell you, we don't sell hunts. But this

Sounds about right.
