What are your internal rules for helping someone in distress on the water

I was always taught to have to render aid if you can, make sure they have you contact CG and least tow then to a rig or bouy or in if you can. Ruin a few fishing trips but always thought what goes around comes around. But I am old so maybe this is just ancient thinking.

100% what you said. I’ve been on both ends of a tow rope enough times to always try and stay ahead on the karma.

Always help but I will not jeopardize my rig for someone else’s rig. I have never felt threatened or been in such bad weather I was not able to as stand hauling someone to the best of my ability. But I couldn’t imagine trying to haul someone else rig even 50-100’ in treacherous seas. If it’s bad I’ll load em up drop a pin drop some marker bouys notify cg and then we are heading back.

I'd never leave someone stranded on the water. If something as simple as needing some gas, then they get gas and I wait until they get running before I leave them.
If broke down and needing a tow, so be it even if I've not wet a line yet. Just the right thing to do.

Was left in lacassine nwr pipeline canal last day of season many years ago. Boo Monceau with Cameron water patrol towed me out after some hours waiting.
I will get them in or to a safe spot and call for assistance, life or death would put them on my boat.

I've been towed in and pulled off a couple mud flats. I've also towed people in and pulled them off of mud flats. If I see a fella with his motor cover off or they look like they may be in trouble ill offer assistance. Its what I was taught to do. Sometimes you the windshield, sometimes you the bug.

I was always taught, and we grew up doing it. You NEVER leave someone stranded on the water. You help them get in. Period.

Im a full time guide on the Texas Coast. Have had customers on board when another boat was stranded. I tell them it is their trip but would yall want to help this crew. 100% of the time without fail the customers have opted to stop the trip and offer help. If there is daylight/time remaining and they want to get back after it we keep on. Im not a clock watcher so happy to get back to fishing. Sometimes they call it a day and no worries. I offer a discount but have always been voluntarily paid full rate.

A boater that needs help takes precedence 100% of the time in my book. The simplest trouble can turn to a life or death situation with quickness on the water.

My dad, who is in the icu tonight. Always told me of a story of him and my grandpa being stranded.
This would have been late 50’s/early 60’s. They were fishing in a 18-20 foot wooden boat my grandpa had built. They were at the mouth of 4 bayous when The engine went down. Grandpa was worried about being pulled out so they started oaring back in. They had launched out of port sulphur and were staying at a camp around rattlesnake bayou.
Right around dusk a big shrimp boat comes by but they were heading out to the gulf. They just left them there. I guess they got situated somewhere and that night they slept on the floor of the boat under news paper.
Wake up and start oaring again. A few hours later a boat comes by and pulled them back to the camp so they could work on the engine.
So many stories like this he regaled to me over the years.
Unfortunately it looks like his time is getting short. I’m not gonna be able to sleep tonight.

The legal rule is:
§2304 Duty to provide assistance at sea
(a) A master or individual in charge of a vessel shall render assistance to
any individual found at sea in danger of being lost, so far as the master or
individual in charge can do so without serious danger to the master’s or
individual’s vessel or individuals on board.
(b) A master or individual violating this section shall be fined not more than
$1,000, imprisoned for not more than 2 years, or both.

I wrestled with this the last time I went out. Me and my buddy just getting to our first spot of the day, I was idling in the channel and about to head off the channel to the spot and a boat was on plane in the channel coming towards us, then slowed down, they trimmed the motor up and then said to us, they think the motor blew. They were out all night and it just quit on them. I said are y'all good? One said yeah he's got a tow service and is on the phone with them. They had a trolling motor and I said can you make it back with the trolling motor? He said we'll just get the tow service. We started fishing, they drifted back towards the marina and another boat coming out stopped and talked to them, next thing you know, he's towing them back. I felt bad, but if they had asked I would have towed them back, its just I didn't offer.
