Oh, it's with an air gun and birth control darts. The horses have over populated themselves. This is one way they control the population size.

quote:

Every Wednesday morning in Utah's West Desert, volunteers armed with rifles have ventured into a herd of wild horses and fire away at the mustangs.

It's not to hurt them. It's to give them a better shot at survival.

"Because I love the horses," said Jessica Franzen explaining her role in what amounts to a long-running science experiment. It's aimed at resolving a decades-old controversy over the future of the picturesque mustangs. "I do love helping out," she said. "There's a huge need."

The volunteers tried to maneuver themselves close enough to get a clean shot at the hindquarters of a wild mare. Instead of using gunpowder and bullets, their rifles used CO2 to fire a dart that packs a chemical punch. Each dart delivered a shot of PZP which makes a mare sterile, temporarily. One booster shot each year keeps her that way.

This worked horribly for NY and its deer, big market for horse meat in other parts of the world.

That's a terrible waste of money and not really a solution.

That's what happens, when you're hung like a horse.

Uh - you could license folks to wrangle their own horse - limit the number of to be taken, limit it to mares/fillies and - voilà - fewer horses in the environment now, and fewer foals next year and the following year. Then re-evaluate.

This sounds like some graduate school, "good idea" fairy crap. Capitalism can help a situation like this tremendously.

Yeah but that’s unsightly. Movies have been made around breaking a horses wild spirit. The white liberal women will fall out in the streets if they did that.

They've tried the round ups. Very few of the horses get adopted.

I’d have a hard time shooting a healthy horse. Just doesn’t seem right.

Can I have a large supply of those darts? I don't want to shoot horses, just a bunch of people that need it.

But in many areas they are starving out native wildlife, destroying the range and starve, eating each other’s manes and tails.

Nobody wants to adopt these horses, and thousands are kept and have to be fed that nobody wants.

The correct answer is to allow the sale of them for slaughter. But no, can’t have people killing horses, gotta let them starve and destroy the home on the range.
