I have a deer I’ve been feeding and getting pictures of since July. He’s now moved to the opposite of my property that borders my neighbors ground. What’s the best way to approach him asking him not to shoot him bc that’s my one target buck for the year? Thanks for any input and advice.

Hey Bob, gotta a second? I need a favor…

I mean, it ain’t like the deer is yours so hopefully your neighbor honors your request. I wouldn’t shoot it if you asked me not to.

What if he approaches you and asks the same thing?

Maybe it’s his target buck.

If a deer that you want to shoot is on someone else’s property you can’t ask them to not shoot if it’s on their property.

Well, I guess you can, but you might look ridiculous.

Don’t shoot him so I can?

That’s not a very good strategy. Seems like all you will accomplish is letting him know there’s a good deer he should be hunting. Keep hunting and hope for the best is my advice.

Quit work and hunt him everyday and don’t mention shite about him to the neighbors.

I'd keep my mouth shut and try to get him first. Asking your neighbor not to shoot a deer on his property sounds pretty entitled and may not go over well. No one here knows the relationship between you two though.

You better shoot him yesterday.

Then I’d say, “you better get him before I do”.

That’s like casting at the same fish.

I’d feel better about talking to the neighbor on a deer I was passing than one I’m wanting to shoot.

“have a deer I’ve been feeding and getting pictures of since July.”

I love running cameras, but the thought that since you got a picture you have ownership of a wild animal is ridiculous. There’s a fair chance that all of your feeding and camera checking is what ran him off.

Get a pic of it, print out a "Lost deer, if found call (your number)" and post it on every tree in the property line. That should get you set.

This.

Talking to your neighbor to help manage and prevent shooting young bucks is a great idea. But once they become “shooters” it should be fair game.

You might talk to him and find out he’s already seen the buck and planning on waiting another year. But you can bet if he sees him again after you say you want to shoot him, he’s probably not going to pass
