I know going surf fishing barefoot, is not a good idea, for a wide variety of reasons, but I do that a lot, and have cut my foot on a shell or rock that I stepped on one time

$20

Save your feet man. Dont go wade fishing without some type of boot or old tennis shoes on. Not worth chancing it.

My MD podnuh carries Chlorhexidine (hibiclens) wipes when fishing. The human ones are pricey. If you don't mind using vet grade they're about 10 bucks for 50 wipes on Amazon.

I'd probably go with that then. He would know way better than me.

Word is that you can also get it intestinally by eating a raw oyster (whose flesh is infected with NF).

That is 100% true. You can get intestinal infections with Vibrio from eating contaminated raw oysters. Not nearly as serious as a wound infection though.

betadine

Local doc who loved to fish told me to keep this in my tackle box and apply liberaly.

Express the wound no matter how much it hurts and the dump all over the area with that stuff until you can get to where you can clean it appropriately.

I’ve been getting into surf fishing in Grand Isle the last few years

Too many crabs and catfish and Corona bottles in the surf to chance it. I wear my water shoes at all times in the water. Way too much stuff to step on out there.

I use Hibiclens if I get a cut while fishing or hunting. After I clean it well, I then put some Liquid Bandage on it and keep plugging away.

I know at least 2 people that got Vibrio. One died and the other guy almost lost a foot. The dude that lived got a a cut where his wader boot rubbed his skin while he was wading down in Matagorda. He didn't think anything about it till he got back to the camp and his foot had swollen to almost double it's size. Luckily somebody in the camp knew there was a Dr in Bay City that specialized in Vibrio and they were able to save his foot from amputation. The other dude wasn't so lucky. He got a cut on his hand down in Boliver and also blew it off until his hand looked like a catchers mit. He ended ended up in Baytown at the hospital and then they got him to Houston Methodist where he ended up passing away a few days later from it. Both guys had comprised immune systems though for what it is worth.

I organized an OB koozie order back in 2016 and he signed me up for all kinds of free shite too, I had surprise packages in the mail from different fishing companies for a week or two, pretty cool of him to do that. Also had the pleasure of meeting him briefly at ICast a few years ago, real nice fella and I hate to hear this. Get well soon man!!

Is there any way to test the water to see if this bacteria is present?

I no it’s in the water but I was taught when I was younger that it’s on the fish. If the fish skin is all jacked up and getting chewed away then cut the line washer your hand and move to a dif spot. Not the best technique, but it’s what I have always done since I was a kid and this was breaking out and killing fishermen.

I honestly think you need to assume that all water contains vibrio, especially in the warm weather months. It also is not just salt or brackish water, it can be fresh as well. A guy in Monroe got it in the Ouachita River while out tubing with his family. He died about 3 days later. If you have a compromised immunity you are rolling the dice if some contaminated water manages to get into a cut or an opening in your body. Take precautions if you have a cut and be able to manage a fresh cut or abrasion while underway.

It’s always present in brackish/salt water. The concentration of vibrio is much lower with cooler water temps and higher with warmer water. I carry doxycycline in my emergency kit so that I can take or administer it as time is of the essence when dealing with this bug. Ask your doc for a script to have on hand. I personally had a bout of necrotizing fasciitis in the growing extending down my leg from staph. Not fun.

Vibrio is about the only thing that scares the crap out of me fishing in our waters along the middle coast, every year you hear of someone that at best has to have something amputated and about once every summer you hear of someone not making it. FIL lost a finger a few years back, looking back I can not remember ever hearing anything about these issues 15, 20, 25 years ago. I wonder if it was always around but you never heard much about it prior to social media or if there are other factors at work. Also keep Hibiclens on the boat at all time now.
