Update: OB poster, Boodreaux, has passed away from infection with Flesh-eating Disease

My wife's cousin is a radio show co-host with Boodreaux in Florida and I'm pretty sure he's the same Boodreaux that posts on the OB. Necrotizing Fasciitis is some bad stuff.
Update 5/24 - Boodreaux passed away last night. Sad

Good morning FFR family and friends. If you didn't hear the news, last night at 1030p BooDreaux passed away. He was fighting Necroting Fasciitis, aka flesh eating disease. This disease is horrible and as anglers, if you go into the water with a cut, either fresh or saltwater you could be in trouble. BooDreaux was the main reason why we had a radio show. When he and I started working together the show was called BooDreaux's BoonDocques. He allowed me to invite Captain Mike in but also change the name to Fishing Florida Radio mainly because NO ONE COULD spell that name. We wanted to have a show that was entertaining first, interview professional anglers and be a show like no other. I know we were one of the first to do this. We were one of the biggest and most downloaded shows on iTunes. At one time, we were the 2nd most downloaded outdoor show on iTunes with MILLIONS of downloads. Boodreaux always allowed us to have fun, poke fun at him, but knew he was a better team player that the main person talking. BooDreaux knew EVERYONE in the industry, scary how many people he knew, and while we all have our faults, he always had our fishing community in his heart and moving forward. He participated in kids fishing events, our Gumbo Wars cooking event yearly and was a good man. I think we are going to still do the blood drive on Wednesday at Fish on Fire, and if your available to make it, we would love to see ya and say thank you for listening to us all those years, we really appreciated the love and support. God Bless!!

I wanted to go surf fishing in Grand Isle yesterday, but I have a bad cut on my leg so I decided not to go. My son was really pissed off. I will show him this thread after school.

Damn coot! Getting old. Lol

Is the water warm enough yet for the bacteria to grow? I thought the real threat occurred when the water got warm and slightly stagnant, around August.
I ain’t a big fan of the water around GI regardless tho so I don’t blame you.

It happens but it's really rare considering the amount of people in and out that water.

a beautiful mid-40's mother from the Lafayette area got the FED from wading in Gulf Shores several years ago. She lost her arm from the elbow down and it devastated her psychologically.

I won the OB fantasy football league one year and he sent me a ton of fish baits as a prize. Good dude. Praying for a speedy recovery

Jeez, I didn’t really know that this was a thing. Do your chances of getting it increase, if you have a cut or open wound? I’ve been getting into surf fishing in Grand Isle the last few years, so I need to find out more about this bacteria.

Yeah, if you have a cut on you, or like me have eczema, you have a vector for infection when you're in water.
I keep sanitizing hand wipes on my boat for this reason. Kinda sucks that I have to be so diligent about it, most people don't have that issue, but you should make sure every cut, scratch, etc. is cleaned thoroughly any time you get inshore water on you.
Outside of eczema, I was once wade fishing elmers island and fell onto some old pilings or something. I had to be on MRSA strength antibiotics for two weeks from that infection and I went to the doctor within 12 hours.
Inshore water can be pretty nasty in the warm months.

Prayers sent. Im scared as shite of that stuff. Being I farm catfish in 109 ponds full of stagnant water I always fear this.
Keep wounds clean and covered and don’t get into water with open wounds. People with weak immune systems from obesity, alcoholism, drug use, artery/heart disease are at higher risk

Yes but it depends a lot on your immune system. And it’s not caused by one type of bacteria but rather many types. Staph is a big one. And you don’t have to get in the water.
Can be caused by a dirty needle. Or you could sneeze on your arm where it has an open wound. Basically, it occurs when you get a bacterial infection and your body can’t fight it off

When fishing Vibrio Vulnificus is almost always the culprit. Most commonly occurs when someones hand gets punctured by a fish fin or shrimp horn.

Well I will definitely start paying more attention to that type of stuff. I know going surf fishing barefoot, is not a good idea, for a wide variety of reasons, but I do that a lot, and have cut my foot on a shell or rock that I stepped on one time. That was a couple years ago, but the thought of getting infections never really crossed my mind before while out there.
I will say, as far as I know I have a pretty strong immune system, but that’s still no reason to not take this stuff seriously, so I definitely will from now on.

Grew up comercial fishing and shrimping and was getting stuck constantly as in 10-20 times a day by various (shrimp/fish/hardheads) never had an issue till one time I had what seemed as a normal stick in the hand and ended up swelling and having a red streak half way up my wrist. I went o the Dr and they claimed a few more days would have been a different treatment than the antibiotic shot I got and pills they gave me.
BTW the shot for the antibiotics is administered I swear with a Cajun injector needle I have never had a shot hurt so bad,, I should have known when they kept asking me if I was ok with shots and if I had someone to drive me home something was up.

Once a captain jumped in the water to scrub the hull of his sailboat prior to a (Gport to Pensa) race. He cut his feet on a pile barnacle climbing out at the pier. He sailed the race then went to the doctor. Lost his big toe. Boat's name was War Canoe, we called him "Chief 9 Toe".

Bleach application is the only thing I have heard as being effective. If you notice the surrounding area darkening like a bruise and hardening then get your arse to an ER ASAP. Like haul arse and burn rubber.
Time is a huge factor in being able to combat the extent of damage
Some people keep a squirt bottle of bleach on the boat for this specific reason
