Unbelievable Discounts on Fishing Gear- JDM

For those of you interested in buying fishing rods and reels, especially high end ones, at the absolute cheapest possible prices, JDM is the way to go. I’m sure some of you are confused or iffy on this, so I’m posting this to help explain.
JDM refers to the Japanese Domestic Market. Due to a good dollar vs yen exchange rate and cheaper overall prices, you can find the same rods and reels sold in the US for up to 50% off on the JDM market.
There are many reputable JDM websites dedicated to selling to the US market. The largest two are:
The Good:
-the best prices you will find anywhere
-quick shipping - your gear will always arrive in about 5 business days
-huge selection - everything available here plus items available only in Japan
The Bad:
-no warranty on anything, no refunds
-Shimano and Daiwa US will not service reels from Japan
-additional post purchase 20% tariff through JLS, I’ve heard Digitaka may add pre purchase 10% tariff to order
I hope this write up helps you to afford the rod or reel you’ve always wanted, like it did for me.

This is correct.
Digitaka charges a flat 10% in addition to the list price at checkout along with no tax and free shipping. But then they ship DDP so no surprise fees once your stuff gets stateside.
And they ship very fast - usually I have a digitaka order in hand before a major US retailer like TackleWarehouse.com, etc...

I can’t speak for Daiwa, but I’ve never owned a Shimano reel that I’ve ever needed ANY warranty work. I still own 6 Curado reels, and 4 Chronarch and they all perform very well, and are all 20+ years old…

I’ve never had a Shimano break, but I did send my Metanium to their repair center for a $45 maintenance. Not going to lie, it was nice. They cleaned it and changed every bearing in the reel, along with a few other parts, at no additional cost. I swear it came back better than when I got it new.

Thanks for clarifying. I like the fact that there is no hidden costs with Digitaka.

Unsure as to whether it's the same for Daiwa or not, but according to a Shimano rep on the Tackle Tour forums, Shimano will service reels bought from Japan if they're the same model as one available in the USDM market.
Agreed on JDM being the way to go though. I've bought from Digitaka, Japan Lure Shop, Asian Portal (before they jacked their prices up to around USDM prices) and Ichiban Tackle and had absolutely no issues with any of them.

That’s some good info, thanks. I broke a JDM Expride (not a model sold in US) and they told me there was nothing they could do since I bought it JDM. It’s not like they could have done anything for it anyway though, and that has to do with their warranty policy.
A site I left out is jdmtackleheaven.com. Their prices used to align with US market prices. I guess they had a change of heart because they have some of the best prices going right now. And they have one of the largest selections. I was looking at the 26 Levantes on there last night. Financially speaking, JDM is both a curse and a blessing.

I bought three Stradics last year for about 145 each. Great deals, fast shipping.

I do not need anything right now, but if any of you track this stuff and see a particularly good deal on anything above Curado/Tatula, please post it.

The SLX DC XT at $200 through JLS is pretty dang good. I’d choose it over a Curado. It’s not as smooth as a Metanium, but it will cast every bit as far and never backlashes

I went on Digitaka for the first time yesterday when my BIL told me about it. Just about everything on there is out of stock.

JLS is too. They stock up just before the spring. I wanted a rod they sold out of and messaged JLS about possibly getting me one. I offered to pay extra but was told that I’ll just have to wait til their fall or spring order and hope they have one. Weird way to do business for sure

Coco, have you ever heard of Discovery-Japan.me? It’s called Discovery Mall, some sort of broker for fishing gear, etc. Google AI says it’s legit but wanted to know if anyone had any experiences buying there

They’ll usually get another stock refresh around October to get ready for the holidays.
Also, they’ll get 2026 Fall new release products as well.
I’ve been buying JDM for about 8 years now. I can’t tell you the last USDM product I’ve bought for myself. Ridiculous what US market prices have become.
Only USDM stuff I buy now is Academy specials for my 7 yr old.

I have not. All of my JDM purchases have been straight through JDM sites, and not through a broker.

It is a legitimate site. I dabble in watches and know some folks who have gone through it for limited release watches in Japan with success. But due to the nature of it's business, the quality and service you receive can be hit or miss. Not to mention shipping charges are an unknown.
For me, digitaka is so easy and reliable that it would have to be a HUGE discount off of digitakas price or just a product they dont carry for me to look elsewhere.
plat.co.jp is another legit JDM site to investigate.
I have used other smaller jdm sites chasing down specific baits but always get stung by tarriffs/duty fees. My last order was $120 + $37 s&h at checkout plus another ~$40 to UPS stateside. Amazingly that still meant the prices on my baits were as good or better than what I had paid for them in the US the 1 time I found them in stock.
