Killed two quarts of shrimp on a 3 hr inshore and just looking for tips to keep more bait moving. Tidewater Baymax live well. Water temp was 87 degrees.

You have fresh water running in the bait well?

Don’t do that. They can’t have changes in PH it will kill them is seconds.

Add frozen water bottles but remove before moving with the motor

Have an aerator.

I mean is the water recirculating or pumping in from out of the boat?

If there is a salinity change from where you bought them to where you fish then that will kill them. Too much temperature change, that will kill them. Too much water pressure in tank knocking them around, boom dead shrimp. Shrimp aren’t that hardy. Try filling the bait tank completely from water very near where you buy the live bait. Keep the baitwell in recirculate only, don’t add raw water. Add a frozen bottle of water occasionally, keep the cap on.

all good suggestions in here. if the water at the launch is too fresh, wait till you hit saltier water. the frozen water bottles are important during the summer. hot water will kill them with the quickness.

also, use a net to take the shrimp out the live well. sunscreen, grease, etc. on your hands will harm them as well.

Refresh the water and use a bubbler(pro air). I keep my pro air on all day and pump new water in a lot, let it overflow and get fresh water in.

I’ve had dead shrimp the past few trips. My bait well just adds fresh water from outside so I just wired in a pro bubbler yesterday I can switch on when I need it. Hoping that will make a big difference. Haven’t had a chance to try it out yet.

I just leave the water I get from the bucket. Changing the salinity especially going more salty will kill them if its done fast.

Make sure you do not have any sunscreen in your hands!

Fill the livewell with water from where ever you get the bait and have the aerator running and scoop them out with a net

Keeps them kicking all day

Not a bait fisherman, so there’s a good chance I don’t know what I’m talking about, but if this were the case, how could they ever get transferred from the shrimp boat to the bait camp?

Wouldn’t that water be different (enough) from where they were caught to kill them at the bait camp?

Slow acclimation and I assume they match the salinity pretty close. Marine animals can change the salinity they live in but not within seconds.

Frozen water bottles. Not ice!!!!!

ETA: I put frozen 2gal Jugs in my livewell (30gal). I first thought it’d be too cold.....nope.

But if the bait camp is by a heavily trafficked launch, don’t fill livewell until you pull into cleaner water.
