Think a coon is getting after my chickens

Had 3 killed this week, head gone, crop eaten, body left in the run.
I assume that is raccoon behavior. What's the best way to get rid of them? Trap and shoot?
I don't have a game camera out there currently but will get one so I can see what time they are coming in.

Second...marshmallows work well too.

Yeah sounds like raccoons. They did the exact same thing to my birds.
I'm not saying to not trap them, I have no problem with that, but for me it was more effective to shore up the coop. After that we had no more issues.

Admittedly, we have gotten accustomed to just leaving the coop door open at night and letting the chickens come and go. We have 2 coops, one for the regular chickens that's 8x8 and one of the ones you buy from tractor supply for some silkies. They are only attacking the silkies at the moment. Which is weird to me because it's smaller and harder to get into.
They drag them out and we find them in the run. We've only found one dead in the actual coop.
Big Fred, the beat arse rooster in the big coop must be keeping them out of there. We are going to lock up at night now.

Shut the door at night or get some automatic doors. Damn near every critter on earth wants to eat chickens

You beat me to it ... it's a possum.
That typical possum MO.

1. Build impenetrable coop on concrete pad.
2. Install automatic doors for run and for free range.
3. ?????
4. Profit

Thats a straight up recipe to not have a flock much longer.
Get an automatic door because even if you trap whatever is getting then now, more things will come after them later unless your coop is basically impenetrable at night.

I grew up n a chicken farm with 100,000 chickens. Sounds like a possum to me.
Problem with raising chickens is everything loves to eat chickens.

I thought only a skunk would eat just the head.

That is the experience that we have had in the past. Mink will do similar and drink all of the blood as well.

Yep. A mink will rip the heads off just to drink the blood. Still trying to catch that little bastard that wiped out my flock

Doors are now getting shut at night. Will look into an automatic door, at least something we can open and close remotely, doesn't even need to be on a timer.
Went a solid year just leaving the door open with no issues. Something found out we have dinner though.
Ordered a trap that comes in tomorrow, will bait and put camera on it. Even though we are closing the doors I'm sure whatever it is will be back again.

I'm not sure I'd even bother catching whatever it is unless its getting them in the daytime. secure the coop; the things that eat chickens are endless.

If a possum, shoring up the coop will be effective. If it is a racoon, you'll have to trap or kill it. A racoon will tear through chicken wire or find ANY weakness in the coop now that it knows an easy chicken dinner is there.
