I've had chickens for the last 13 years. Sounds like possums. I set traps ever week or 2, dry cat food as someone mentioned, relocate a couple feet below the grass. Man if someone ever digs up my back yard...

We also have 2 dogs that have access all around the chicken run and coop so we don't have much if any trouble with wildlife killing chickens. Have lost more to hawks over the years, but not enough to start relocating the hawks.

I have a large chicken yard,I have electric fence all the way around ,1 wire at bottom and 1 at top.
I’ve never lost a chicken to a varmint.I have found quite a few possums in my chicken house over the years, apparently they are able to squeeze between top of fence and hot wire.
The possums have never killed a chicken, they do eat eggs and I think the chicken food.

Reason I don’t pick up my eggs until after dark is I also have 2 goats and I have to feed them after dark to keep chickens from eating the goat food.

I second a small trap with sardines + cat food. 100% effective. You can also rat poison some marshmallows and not deal with trap.

I have dogs and kids so I want to avoid poison or hot wires if I can.

They have a full run with fencing 8 ft tall, can't really see anywhere the fence is getting pushed down from something climbing over it.

I'm building a new coop currently, but each is lined with hardware cloth so no real way to get in (if the door is closed )

turn the hardware cloth outward 18" at the bottom of wall and pour dry cement over the bend. Animals will always dig at base of a fence. if its turned outward 18" they'll not find the end to get under it. Ive been in your exact situation.

If the head is gone it’s almost certainly a mink.
Possums usually only eat the guts. They do eat eggs and feed, though.
A coon will eat almost the whole thing.

Best recourse is secure the coop like mentioned, use hardware cloth to seal all gaps, trench filled with concrete with the wire in the concrete is best. A mink can go through a tiny hole.
Automatic door is a lifesaver. It will save them if you are late getting home to close the door.

Amazon

I have this automatic door with a solar panel, a solar charge controller and a lawnmower battery.

It's been a great set-up as we are very busy with life and I never worry about having to get back home.
