Anyone have any info on the Ascend kayak brand from Bass Pro? I can get a brand new 12 for about $700 and then add about $500 in accessories and be Golden. Thanks fellas.

I think most here regard them as the best bang for the buck. I have 2 that are going to be retired soon to make way for a pedal drive. However, if you have $1200 to spend I might look into a used yak with some of the accessories you’re wanting. What $500 worth of accessories are you wanting to add?

Anchor and trolley system
Blackpack/crate
Paddle and paddle holder
Rod holders (unless they’re already on there)
Fish finder/GPS/battery
Maybe an upgraded seat with sliding storage under the seat
Maybe a new Yeti (or similar brand) small ice chest
PFD

Probably won’t add the fish finder at least initially. I don’t think it will help that much. The ice chest can wait too.

If you have $1200 to spend look elsewhere, the Ascends are decent as starters but no way would I dump $1200 in one. For reference I just sold a Cuda 14 with rudder system and everything you listed minus fish finder, crate, and PFD for $975. I recently saw another Cuda for $800 with less accessories. Point being, you can get a far superior kayak on your budget than an Ascend, and my first kayak was an Ascend. Pretty sure I know of a Native 14.5 that would be well within your range too.

You can find a used kayak with plenty of accessories if you look hard enough. Where do you live?

Was rough as hell in BSL this morning and then went flat calm around 7:30am.

Where’d you go in the Bay? Taylor reef? Jourdan River marsh? Nice trout.

Man I need to go fishing with you.

Between the bridges. Lots of small trout, but most of the big ones have moved out front. I figured this would be the case and wanted to fish out front, but it was little too sporty at 5am out there.

Be glad to show you some spots. The Bay was on fire up until this week.

Kept 7 between two of us this morning. Lots of dinks. Not sure what to do after this nap.

Do y’all know anything about the Skimmer 116 Ultimate Kayak? I looked at it at the kayak store today. It was about $1200. I could get it well equipped (anchor and anchor trolley, paddle, rod holder, PFD, maybe a stop stick) with a car mount for about $2000.

Selling points for me were its light weight (42 lbs) and comfortable seat. The negatives are how narrow it is and the price. The plastic also didn’t feel very strong.

For comparison, I could get a “well equipped” (see above) Native Manta for about $1600. It’s heavier and wider.

As y’all may recall, I’m looking for something to allow me to fish the inshore reefs and bayous.

If you’re gonna spend $2000 to hell with paddling you’re in used Outback/Compass territory now.

If you are really concerned about weight, you can get a Compass for under $2000. It’s 67lbs and is a great boat

I agree. I also spoke with the salesman about the Compass.

Like I said earlier, I paid $2k for a loaded lightly used Outback. Craigslist and Facebook are your friends. Just keep looking. Also join the Bayou Coast Kayak Fishing Club website and Facebook page. There are always kayaks for sale.

If I were shopping for my first kayak with $1,200 to $2,000 to spend, I would focus on these brands:

$2,000 Price Range (New/Used Pedal Kayak):
Native with Propel pedal drive
Hobie with Mirage pedal drive

$1,200 Price Range (New/Used Paddle Kayak):
Native
Jackson
Wilderness Systems
Bonafide
Nucanoe
Feelfree (MAYBE)

I would also focus on finding something with a raised seat for comfort, your arse will not like sitting on plastic (even with a cushion) after an hour or so. You can't go wrong with any of the big brands listed above, all others are inferior in my opinion.

Nucanoe

Just looking at videos and specs, the Flint would be my go-to paddle kayak. Its 11'3, 33 inches wide, and 63lbs. That open deck is also a big draw. It also has a square transom so you could mount a power-pole or trolling motor easily.

Has anyone on here demoed one?
