One kayak I never see listed on any of the used sites is a Slayer Propel. Never ever.

Because it's the best kayak out there right now.

That’s what I thought.

Nobody wants to get rid of them. I search the classifieds occasionally hoping to run into a good deal on one and I have never seen a single one listed.

For the Native guys

What's the difference between previous Slayer models and the new Slayer XC?

Supposedly it has a shallower draft. Designed more for river fishing. That’s about all I can tell you. I have not seen it in person. Mark Makers will maybe chime in. He’ll probably know more about it.

Do not like the front area change. Those covered hatches are worthless to me.

Some of the rivers I fish, an open tankwell area up front would be a disaster with your gear constantly getting soaked, and potentially picked up and floated off when going down and through some rapids areas. I understand from a flatwater standpoint the benefit of an open front area, but in a river boat, the closed hatch is necessary.

I never see Natives for sale down here because nobody owns them. Our club is 95% Hobie. I did see a 10' Slayer last time at PAC.

I saw more Natives last weekend at GI than any other brand.

I really wish I could do a Propel drive and rudder retrofit on my Slayer 14.5. I know I’ve said this before, but it would really be my ideal kayak.

I thought that thing was a barge

Propel drive on my 12? The perfect kayak.

Slayer 12 XC was designed primarily for rivers. It’s wide and stable with a flat bottom. This makes maneuvering easy, sharp turns with very little paddle strokes, but not so good on tracking. To counter the tracking issue, it has a retractable skeg. Lower the skeg once you are in the calm waters, and it paddles good and straight. It has horizontal rod holders which are nice to avoid getting your rods hung up in overhanging tree limbs. It also has a setup on the rear for a chain drag system. Don’t know much about that since I don’t fish rivers but apparently some sort of system to slow you down when you are fishing in a river current.

It also has an electronics pod in the center to house your fish finder equipment and transducer. Or you can pull the pod out altogether and replace it with a flat plate to give you an open deck for fly fishing

Correct. You let down the drag chain to slow you down when trying to fish moving water. That way you're not getting stuck using an anchor but you can slow enough to make casts. It's a really well thought out feature for a river boat.

The drop-down skeg is sweet too. Fished this past weekend with someone in an older Native Ultimate that had the same feature. I was worried with as much dragging over granite rock formations that we did that the skeg would be hurt, but it stays nice and flush when not deployed. Barely scratched at all.

If I were buying a new yak today, for the river fishing and small water fishing that I primarily do here in OK, it would be either the Old Town Predator MX or the Native Slayer XC. The Coosa HD is an awesome boat but for the extra $$$, I don't think it's worth it. Plus it's bigger than both the XC and the MX

I have the Native Slayer 14.5 for sale for $850. It comes with a Garmin Striker 4 already setup. It has 2 batteries with front running LED lights and a back light. This kayak is pretty awesome but it is time I upgrade. Let me know if you are interested and I can send you pictures via e-mail.

I’d want the 13. I don’t carry a lot of gear, but enough to where the 10 would be too small. I did a demo of the 10’ though and it was quite impressive. I was really surprised how stable it was for a 10’ yak.

Thanks for the breakdown. I like the horizontal rod configuration.
