I think I have around 17-18 fly rods and I built most of those

I’m not exactly sure which post he was responding to but I think it’s one on page 42?

Im about to start getting an 8wt together and I think I am going to go with SA Mastery Redfish line.

Do I need to use 8wt line or line up a size?

I am seeing a shitload of "lightly used line" on ebay for $15-$20. Is this worth the 75% cost difference or should I just play it safe and buy new line?

Redfish tapers already have very heavy heads so there's no need to overline.

It's up to you with the new line vs. used. Never bought used line before but most of my lines are 2+ years old.

What are you going to piece together? I'm also about to put together something for red fishing. Thinking about an allen kraken (7wt-9wt) and pairing it with TF BVK (size not determined yet).

Looking to do this on a smaller budget so I think I am going to go with an Echo Base rod (got one for my 5wt back around Christmas) and Im still up in the air on the reel. Im looking for a used Kraken or something similar, a Lamson Liquid (a little heavier but sealed drag @ $100) or a Behemoth.

Bump for a little help.

Heading to a farm this weekend to do a little turkey hunting and there is a nice stocked lake. Last year I pulled a 6.5lber out of it with conventional tackle. This year I'm bringing my 5wt fly rod too. What size leader should I use and suggestions on flies?

for bass fishing you want to go 0x or bigger for a leader, especially if you have decent sized fish. They are not leader shy but will abrade the hell out of one. thickness is more important than strength IMO. Check your leader after every fish and re-tie if it is abraded.

FYI, you can land a bass just fine on a 5wt but it is really going to limit your fly selection. I mostly fish for bass with my 8wt to be able to throw the flies I want. If you have a bigger rod i'd bring it.

I like poppers/sliders/divers early and late. Don't be afraid to go big.

For subsurface: clouser minnows, meat whistles, lunch moneys, crawfish imitations, craft fur type baitfish, anything with a bunny strip.

yes to clousers. other small baitfish flies like cyperts minnows or anything 1-2" long with a bunny strip in white or chartreuse will work too. I really like clousers tied on a jig hook. They love to short strike so tie everything a little closer to the hook or bring some scissors just in case. If you really get on them they'll hit pretty much anything.

sinking leader depends on where you are and how deep the fish are. I always tie up a half dozen or so clousers in different weights. I'm not a sinking leader fan but will fish a sink tip line if I really feel the need to get down (or forget my floating line). Most of the white bass I have caught were on a floating line/mono leader.

If it's slow but you think they're there, try some different presentations. Dead drift, up current, down current, slow strips, fast, bounce the bottom, etc.

Anyone done any fishing around Santa Rosa Beach? Was hoping to do some wading or maybe rent a kayak. Planning on giving the shops around there a call, but figured i might as well ask the outdoor board too.

Any info would be much appreciated. Planning on bringing my 7 wt. Could always rent some bigger gear there if need be.

I’ll be there first week of April.

Got bored last night, so I tried to tie a fly or too. It’s a lot Harder to do than what you see on the internet!! Can’t wait to catch a red on a homemade fly.

I bought an orvis encounter 5wt two years ago and finally got it on the water. I got it to learn and catch bluegills, sacolait, and small bass. I grabbed a couple of bream killers and am toying around with this. I’ve had a couple of bites just screwing around and found my tempo. I absolutely love fishing in this manner.

My question is, with the target fish listed earlier, are there any flies recommended for starting out?

Any sort of small popping bug will work for bass and bream when the topwater bite is on.

Common bass flies are Clouser Minnow, Deceiver, Wooly Bugger, whistlers, streamers. You’re just trying to imitate what they would eat naturally. In rivers and creeks this might be a crawfish pattern. In lakes it might be a baitfish pattern.

For bream you’ll want an assortment of dry and wet flies. I think matching the hatch is a good idea no matter what you’re fishing for. If mayflies are everywhere, fish a mayfly pattern. Nymphs, terrestrials, spiders...anything imitating a small bug or insect larvae will catch bream. Lookup Miller’s fly shop online. He ties good flies and has a wide selection sorted by fish species

not bad looking.

It takes practice. Lots of practice.

One thing that I've found is that beginners almost always use thread that is too big.

And once you learn how to tie deer hair poppers, you have a hard time tying much else. They're fun to do.

Any of y’all have a recommendation for a fly rod travel bag?

A couple of international trips kinda fell in my lap and I’m looking for something to throw four to five 4 piece rods in a bag with some other gear.
Looking around, all I see is +$175 bags ... a little over the top for something I’ll get to use once a year if I'm extremely lucky.

Allen seems to have a cheaper one on Amazon...any other recs?

Just throw the rod tubes in a bag you already have.

Should have added...

Was trying to just bring backpack and a some type of rod case.
Tubes won’t fit in my carryon bag or backpack
