Some days there’s nothing you can do. Try and get it to basically bump the redfish on the nose in hopes that he just can’t refuse it since it’s so close. Other than that not much else to do.

While we are on redfish, what is the best general leader to use?

I normally just tie straight 9’ sections of 15lb or 20lb fluoro. Never have an issue turning the fly over. That being said, I’m sure tapered leaders are preferred by most.

Not the best conditions, but this old boy was a good fight.

Thanks
I like it. I don't have much to compare it to as it is my first fly set up, but I have no complaints at all. I'm sure there are many reels that are better, but for the price, it's excellent. It's smooth, not too heavy, and was under $100. Balances nicely on the BVK.
This guy tested the drag out pretty good and almost got me on the backing.

Depends on how anal you want to get with your leader and what you're fishing with. If you're fishing with poppers or anything topwater I'd suggest having at least the butt section made out of mono. Keeps the line floating and helps pick the fly up at long distances.
I only really pay attention to my leaders when I've got time, which is often lately because of the weather. For every day redfishing I use about 4' of 40lb mono, 2' of 25lb mono, and 2' of 20lb fluoro tip. The mono is Berkley big game and the fluoro is Seaguar blue label. If I don't have time, I just use like 6' of 40lb fluoro and 2' of 20lb fluoro. The mono also stretches some, which helps if you're like me and your friends all make fun of you for setting the hook to hard.
Tapering a leader the right way (and paying attention to line diameter) will absolutely help you turn a fly over, especially casting straight into a headwind. It's really not high on the priority list for redfish though, just because it's really rare that you'd need to make super technical shots.
I am very anal about leader selection when it comes to bonefish and carp.

Haha for sure. I like to use Rio’s 20lb fluoroflex tapered leaders for bones, but they’re really difficult to turn over casting into a head wind and they’re expensive af. It’s much cheaper to make your own. A 350yd spool of Berkley big game costs like $6 at Academy and lasts forever. That’s the other reason I try to tie my own leaders if I’ve got them time. Much cheaper to do that than to burn through spools of Seaguar blue label using 8’ at a time for leaders.
But yeah, like I said. It’s not worth overthinking for redfish. My mentality is it makes casting in the wind easier for me, so I’ll make my own if I have time. If I don’t, I won’t lose any sleep over it. Flats fishing is different, especially if you’re throwing leaders that are 12’ or 13’. Taper becomes a lot more noticeable and a lot more important at that distance. Totally unnecessary for redfish.

Anyone fishing the Point Aux Chene Fly fishing only tourney this Sunday? I think this is the second year they hold it. There is a boat and kayak division. Weather is looking ok so far. should be a fun time.

If anyone has extra room on the boat, I’ll buy gas and beer. My fly rig is down at the moment and I really wanna get on it

I’m not gonna make it this year. My friend and I fished it last year. It rained the whole time and we did more beer drinking than fishing. We had a good time though.

How you baws feel about the Nautilus CCF-X2? Looking to upgrade to a 6/8 or 8/10. This will be mostly used for saltwater, but I'd like to use it in some freshwater from time to time.

Great reel. I'm assuming you are planning on putting it on an 8wt rod? If so I would get the 6/8
