I'm optimistic for this year. I just started putting out feeders at my house 3 years ago. The first year I only had one feeder and never saw more than 3 hummers. Last year I was running 3 feeders and stayed on top of keeping fresh nectar and clean feeders. I had 5-8 hanging out regularly and had over a dozen for a couple days during the peak of the fall migration back South.

This year, I'm already set out, and bought another feeder for a total of 4.

Biggerbear said consistency is key to getting the swarms. The more years you do it, the more find it and bring back juveniles. It snowballs from there basically.

My biggest fight is that I live in a neighborhood. No telling how many old ladies I'm competing against for hummingbirds in the immediate area. My mom lives out in the country on 55 acres. She hangs 2 feeders up and had 10+ within a couple of days.

I had one male stop by the feeders in Madisonville 2 days ago but haven't seen any since then. Must have just been passing through.

Hi Clyde Tipton -

Great job with the migration prediction maps.

Another year. Another year to enjoy hummers. I can tell you and others are fascinated by them. So am I.

I agree with putting out feeders early - around March 1 in Houston area. Would not be too early to do the same in Shreveport. You did - good.

If you don't do it, you will lose migrants that might have spent the "year" in your immediate area. If they see no feeders, they move on.

Since I know that there are so many hummingbird lovers on this site, I will link one of your hummer threads from late April of last year for other readers to enjoy (if you don't mind):

Hummingbirds/Hummingbird feeders - Clyde Tipton

Note my 3 posts on page 3. All the best to everyone in enjoying those magnificent creatures.

My wife leaves a few out during the winter. There are some hummers that winter over in south Louisiana. For good info look up Nancy Newfield. She's a hummingbird expert from Metairie.
She's been doing hummmers for years and is known through the US and probably the world.
Met her in Grand Isle a few years ago for the anual bird migration day. Lots of hummers come through Grand Isle on there way back up north.
She actually came to our house and caught and tagged a few hummers a couple of years ago.

You are the other poster I was thinking of with all the good info.

I assume you have your feeders set out already? Looks like a sighting just South of Houston, and a new LA sighting in the New Orleans area yesterday.

Good deal.

Looks like the map updated with an East TX sighting. Looks to be around Jasper TX.

Just put my feeder out today in Lafayette. If I start seeing birds, I will probably put out more.

Last year was my first year and I had 1 little mean bastard that kept running all the others off.

I read on the web that putting out more feeders can alleviate this problem.

For our location in NELA, yes - much more activity in the fall if we get the feeders out now...much more.

makes me recall a slightly humorous FB conversation.

Older lady relative was talking about not seeing hummers. Other old male relative replies about only having couple hummers so far this year.

There was some other talk about hummers that I don't fully remember but it was pretty funny to me. Totally serious conversation btw.

We were at a friends home in Carencro one weekend during the height of
the HB season. She is a master gardener and had designed the garden to attract butterflies and hummers. A treat I'll never forget was standing directly under a feeder and having about 20 or 30 HBs flitting around my face. So close I could feel the breeze from the wings.
Several years ago we were on Ship Island off Biloxi and the HBs were coming in. Don't remember the date but that was very cool.

I had the opportunity to trap/band ruby throats a few years ago. We set up about 30 feeders at a professor's house in one of the neighborhoods off highland, (Woodstone neighborhood), and put electric-door cages around 2 or 3. We saw hundreds of birds, and got to band about 10-20

Do you maintain all summer? Not sure I can do that.
