“A buffalo looks at you like you owe him money.”

Robert Ruark

As an outdoorsman no single game animal has captivated my imagination as much as the Cape Buffalo. Even as a young man reading excerpts of the hunters of yesteryear like Ruark, Capstick and the like in rags like Petersens or Sports Afield were always my favorites.

Black Death… 1,500lbs with a reputation for being particularly unpleasant when cornered or wounded. A member of Africa’s Big Five and the Dangerous Seven. Animals that will mess you up.

Cape Buffalo hunters are injured or killed every year. There’s a saying among the African guides that the Buffalo are born angry and every day just pisses them off more. Alas, the lure of dangerous game is strong.

Last year I decided that 2021 would be my chance to fulfill that dream. I wanted to hunt genuine wild and self propagating Buffalo and do it as those hunters of yesteryear did. That is, with a double rifle chambered in a classic Nitro Express cartridge.

After 8 days, dozens of miles, now torn and tattered clothes and many failed stalks it finally came together. The noses and survival instincts on these guys is incredible. I’ve had three close encounters with this old Buff over the course of the hunt. Locking eyes with him on the 6th day at 15 yards before he gave us the slip. A positively massive bull.

We finally managed to get ahead of him and he finally made a mistake. He was among four bulls and coming right towards us. The Heym 450/400 Nitro Express rang true at 20 yards and he expired a few steps from the point of impact. Somewhat bittersweet; but, a dream fulfilled and I couldn’t be happier.

A tough and noble adversary. He made me earn it unlike anything else I’ve ever hunted. Huge respect.

43 7/8” wide and 16 1/2” bosses.

Genuine sentiments of satisfaction and fulfillment in your post make me smile.
Congrats on the bucket list check. Nice bull.

I follow an Instagram account that has a video of a
Lioness trying to kill a down Buffalo. Another buffalo charges in and hooks the lioness, flipping her several times. Its a stunning clip but makes you feel sad for the lioness and gives you perspective on what a bad mofo a buffalo is. Wish I could link it.

Wiltz, awesome buff. i hoped to see you on here. Havent you done oscellated turkeys? Any comments on that hunt? did it feel like a hunt or like a species collected? Some of the hunts look ok but then in some it looks like a scared bird walking out to food source and getting smoked.

Congrats brother, job well done from start to finish. Once you hunt the dark continent, that shite gets in your blood. I have no doubt you're already planning a future trip. Any aspirations of completing the Big 5 ?

Awesome! What’s country? Wife and I honeymooned in S.Africa and Mozambique in April…too bad she only let me take my Nikon and not my rifle on our safari.

I did Occelated Turkey a decade or so ago. I enjoyed it.

It’s certainly not the same as having a big vocal Eastern in front of you.

That said, it’s a fun experience. A beautiful bird in a lovely part of the planet. They can be called; but, it requires a small speaker and a recording of the song of the male. We had good success coaxing in other males looking for a fight.

The most common route of attack is shooting them off the roost, sitting a blind in high traffic areas or a spot and stalk which is quite fun too.

I would not recommend the outfitter I used. He was older and may not even be around anymore. Jorge Sansoeurs at Snook Inn Lodge. Good hunt; guy just isn’t transparent about pricing and hidden fees. I doubt that he has many return customers.

I did Gould’s with RSO. I’d trust Brad to get you into the Occelated too.

I totally get it now. I wanna go back for sure. May not chase Buffs again; but, wanna build time to go to Cape Town and the Stellenbosh wine region. I had three animals on my hit list for Africa. Buffalo, Kudu and Sable. The kudu eluded me.

Did pick up a nice Nyala and after seeing a Zebra my 8 year old son said we had to have one. LOL…

As for the rest of the Big 5.. I really don’t have any desire to chase an elephant. Now that pretty much all lion hunts are captive raised I have no desire there either. I could see doing Leopard though. It looks like a lot of fun.

The hunting grounds were near Musina in the Northern part of South Africa. A stones throw from the Limpopo River and the Botswana border.

I see you shot an accumark in the others. What caliber 30-378?

Also, what brand was your side by side? That’s a nice looking gun.

That Weatherby is 20 years old now. An old first generation Ultralite in 300 Weatherby Magnum. It did great; if anything it may be too much gun. Knowing what I know now; a 7mm-08, 308 or even a 30-06 would be plenty.

The side by side is a Heym 89B. I’ve got a post in this forum with more pics and descriptions of it.

Sold guns back in the late 90s in college…. Have an appreciation for a fine piece. Sold a good bit of weatherby, sako, Dakota and perazzi stuff….

Those ultralights were sweet.

Shot an accumark 30-378 at a pig this past season at a buddy’s place. It’s a damn beast.
