Neighbor killed this today near his back porch. It was only about a foot long but since he’s been keeping the grandkids, he went ahead and killed it.

It's a tough one for me cause I was fooled by one earlier this year. I think it is a banded water snake. But I'm not sure.

If the eyes are visible from above or not is a reliable indicator of if it's harmless or venomous. Eyes visible from above=harmless, eyes not visible=venomous. Can't see the eyes of this one so cottonmouth.

That banding is unmistakable, 100% cottonmouth.

The stub tail says cottonmouth

Were the pupils round or diamond shaped?

The dots inside of the bands give it away as well....110% water moc/cottonmouth

What type of measurement's are you using? Because if that is a one foot moccasin, I have a 13" trouser snake.

It's a harmless Cottonmouth. Congrats on your impending cotton infestation.
