Getting my boys a new rifle for next year. 12 and 10. Recommendations?
Check out the CVA Cascade, they are nice rifles and the quality is enough to last them for years.
I don't actually have one but i have several friends that do and they all love them.
If you want to step up from there Bergara is where it is at IMO. I have a .308 and my youngest has a .300 WM.
If you want something a little cheaper check out the Savage axis, i know some people hate them but both of my sons hunted with them (7MM-08) when they were younger. We have put a lot of deer in the freezer with those cheap little guns.

30-30 lever action would be a poor choice. A bolt action is inherently safer and more accurate.
The Ruger American is an accurate rifle. Put a suppressor on it.

Weatherby Vanguard Compact.
Comes with spacers that allow you to adjust the length of pull. Would be a rifle that can be used a lifetime. It’s a Howa 1500 action and can’t be beat for the money (maybe less than $600).
Looks like it comes in .243, .308, 6.5cm, 7mm-08, and 350 legend.
Any of those will work. I use the first 3 calibers (in rifles, different manufacturers).
My son has been using a regular Vanguard (non adjustable version) for years and is about to turn 19. He’s got a wall full of skull mounts and a couple of full mounts using a 6.5cm. I’m proud to say he’s a much better shot/hunter than I am.

Im going to try mine with some .223 heavy match bullets
My son when home with one of his buddies this past year and they got up to hunt. He didn't have his rifle and borrowed one of theirs. It was an AR in 5.56. They were using 69 gr bullets (same thing I use in a couple of mine predator hunting).
He had a very old 6pt come out right around 225 yds (according to him). He hit it good. Got to were is was standing a couldn't find blood. Called me and I told him it probably didn't exit and to start sweeping. They found it piled up 65 yds away in some thick stuff. Said the insides were mush when they cleaned it.

Yea, ive got some concerns about no exit.
Im thinking they've got to be spitting blood out their nose if the lungs are mushed, but i guess I'll find out.
If it doesnt work well, I'll get a 6mm ARC upper and try that. I'm kinda bent on getting an AR15 platform rifle set up for my wife and kids. Everything about it is so perfect besides the caliber.

My recommendation would be AR chambered in 6.5 Grendel.
I built one specifically for hunt a few years ago and it’s been my go-to gun since. Tack driver. Never had a deer go farther than 30 yards. Shots ranging from 30-200yds.
Barnes vortex tac tx bullets

I mean u might find a few drops as in what it looks like if you slice you finger with a knife but I have killed several with a sst in 6.8spc and 243 and 50-75yd they are dead but hand and knee blood trails.
I think without a exit hole that the blood has a hard time travel up the wind pipe to exit out on breath alone and that even with rapid breathing the deer is only alive for 6-8 seconds so not a lot of breaths.

Not to hijack this thread, but I’m looking for a similar solution. I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to AR in either 300 blk or 6.5 Grendel. Here’s what I’m looking for:
Deer hunting at 120 yards max, with almost all shots under 70 yards.
Small frame gun with adjustable LOP for my son to learn on but also can fit me. Shortish barrel, easy to move around in box stand or my stands where deer are very close and I want limited movement getting the gun up.
Shoot a suppressor, not subsonic, but just to save the ears and make it more pleasant while my son learns to shoot.
I think both cartridges have enough power, but 6.5 is more power but doesn’t seem to add much recoil. It does add a few inches to the barrel though.
Thoughts?

We grew up shooting the 6mm. It is basically the same ballistics as 243.

120yrds u could use 6.5g, 6.8 spc or 763x39. I would look at the KS47 in 762x39 just because the bullets are cheaper and the gun has such good reviews. I have & have used both a 6.8 SPC and KS 47 hog hunting. Both have recoil comparable to a ar15 & will put a nice hole in a hog.

Must have missed something.
Thought he said a rifle for his boys, 19 and 12 ????
I am thinking they would have to be pretty big kids to handle the weight and size of an Armalite AR-10

My AR-10 with 18” barrel is right at 9 lbs with scope. Not bad at all.
ETA: the scope is a Trijicon AccuPower illuminated FFP 1-8x 20 something. 34mm tube. It’s heavy

The 6.8 SPC, 6.5 Grendel and KS 47 are all very light guns. As light as my AR 15. And again light recoil similar to an AR15
My RockRiverArms X1 in 308 is as heavy as a boat anchor though. Probably 15 pounds in all with 20 rounds of ammo.

I understand your point. But IMHO I would feel my son is too young to shoot a high powered rifle if he can’t operate a hammer safety. And I would not want my 10 year old shooting further than a 30-30s effective range until they are older and more experienced.
I realize this is a somewhat of a conservative stance and I will likely get downvoted. Lol

Had to tweak it and put a new buffer tube (rifle length) on it to get it to shoot properly but after I did that it’s been perfect.
Without really dialing the ammo in it’s easily 1 MOA with store bought ammo.
ETA: found a pic:

I don’t hate this. They’ve both shot the platform plenty. Just need one in an actual hunting caliber.
6.5 Grendel has killed many a pig for me so I see no reason it wouldn't kill deer.
ETA: I think the 300 blackout is similar to a 30/30 ballistics wise.

Grendel over the Blackout and I have both.
