The time has come to go ahead and start a silencer collection. I’ve apparently waited far too long, the two I have my eyes on are out of stock everywhere. Matter of fact, most reasonably priced silencers are out of stock where I’ve looked.

My question: is this typical or just a temporary thing caused by the drastically shortened wait times to get them?

I just got a serial number for Dead Air Nomad L today. I went to a Silencer Shop kiosk, did all the fingerprinting and stuff. Went home and ordered a back ordered silencer and it took about 4 weeks to get a serial number. Now waiting to get approved for the exchange. But order a back ordered one and get in line is the best advice.

I think the demand increased due to the shortening of the wait time. Which in turn affects the availability.

People used to have to wait over a year for a suppressor. Now it’s weeks. Sometimes days.

Take into account the budget friendly options:

- Aero Precision Lahar-30
- Yankee Hill Machine Resonator and Turbo series
- Otter Creek Polonium

All of those can be had for less than $600. Sometimes $500. I’ll never understand why people still use a Silcencer Shop kiosk. I could’ve gotten a Lahar-30 L for $569 last Friday at a local dealer that had them in store. Silencer Shop has a standard Lahar-30 for $630.

My local dealer has their own digital fingerprint machine and everything is done on their eforms account.

I just did a quick search through gun.deals and found a few sites with them in stock. The issue is getting someone around you to accept the NFA transfer. Usually around $100 for that but I’ve seen some looneys charge $250 for the transfer. Just ask around would be my advice if you’re impatient and want it now.

Best thing to do is go to a local shop that has a good selection and pick one out from there. You never know when something online will come back in stock. Also, it's nice to hold it and get the feel of the weight and build quality.

Has been my experience. Things would be sold out, then would go to a couple local shops and they'd happen to have one. Plus the benefit of no transfers, etc.. Had the kiosk available so the whole process was easy. Never bought online, so it may be easier than what I imagine, but it was nice to put hands on it before buying. And luckily in the Houston area, there are plenty of shops, so a chance someone has what you are looking for in stock. At least for the popular items.

Hopefully, silencers will be delisted and not be controlled by ATF in the very near future.

It's beyond absurd that in 2025 you can't order a suppressor and have it shipped to your door the same day.

Because it makes the process so easy for the first time buyer. They handle everything and guide you along the way (and have all your information available for a quick purchase later on). If you have any questions or hiccups along the way - they can help.

Short story…my first suppressor purchase was from a normal dealer who had the silencer shop kiosk (my main objective)…I did everything like normal and never received any updates that things were proceeding normally. I emailed silencer shop to get updates, figuring that they were the holdup. Turns out that the normal gunshop dealer who sold me the suppressor was “in the process” of changing over to exactly the in house process you are explaining. This went on for a month before the dealer admitted to what he was doing. I was pissed beyond being pissed and had him refund my money (he still fricked me on my sales tax).

I called silencer shop and ordered one on the phone and had it within a month.

I understand that my situation is abnormal, but screw fooling around with trying to save a little when it’s already absurd.

Just my $.02.

Exactly what I did today. He had a decent selection in stock. I plan to take my rifle up there this weekend to try on a few and see what feels right on it.

Of what he has in stock he recommended the Omega 300 and OCL Hydrogen S, but also said if I have my heart set on something else we’d go through the process and he would backorder it and then we wait.

It suppresses... doesn't silence. Sorry, I just had to.

When you say this, do you mean just threading it on and getting a "feel" for it. Or do they let you try some out?

As far as Silencer Shop vs. local shop. If your local shop has a kiosk, you are basically just buying from the local shop and getting the benefit of the stamp going through Silencer Shop. Still have to work with the shop to ensure things are validated or whatever that step is, but it's very nice to have online traceability through Silencer Shop's portal. Plus I now have my stamps in a wallet that is easily accessible on my phone if I ever do forget to have a physical copy of the stamp on me.

I use Meplat in Metairie. Couldn’t be any easier.

I either buy what he has or find one online. Have it sent to him if online. $25 to reprint my pic and fingerprints. $100 transfer fee if online. Pay him the $200 tax regardless. This can all be done over the phone the second time around. Once they receive it, I go in and put in my pin for eforms. Wait 3 days (the last 3) and go pick it up.

So by buying his stock i save the transfer fee. Otherwise he handles it all. Super easy.

100%

LGS vary in how they handle NFA stuff. Some are great and should be the preferred option, some aren't. Gun stores in general are getting better than the LGS of prior decades - less attitude, more CS centric, more competitive with bigger/online entities. But for first time buyers who don't know how their local store handles it, a big outfit that makes it easy is attractive.

I use Capital Armory in TX for most of my stuff, as they'll ship to your door and will accept ETF files. There is a lag on the backend in the shipping (a week-10 days as I recall) but getting your forms out is faster especially if you don't trust the LGS or don't like SS.

My local shop uses a Silencer Shop Kiosk and all but 2 that I own have been done through them. It's so easy.

The two that I did prior, that LGS doesn't sell silencers only longer.

Yes, exactly this. See how the added weight feels on the end of my barrel. See how it carries on my shoulder. That sort of thing.

Ended up buying an Omega he had in stock.

This is good advice, as long as you do your research ahead of time to be sure you're getting why YOU want and not just what he wants to sell. This happened w/ my first 30 cal suppressor. The local dealer suggested the Harvester 300. While it is a good suppressor, it's not approved for some of the handguns I wanted it for, including a 284 Win w/ a 16" barrel. I ended up buying a second 30 cal suppressor (Dead Air Nomad L) which I prolly would've done eventually anyway. Last year I bought 2 suppressors from a different local dealer using Silencer Shop. The Silencer Shop process was easy for me, but bad for the dealer. He said it'd be the last time he used SS. Last week I bought an Otter Creek Polonium 556 suppressor from Joe Bob's. The same local guy charged me $50 for the transfer. I submitted the Form 4 yesterday. He said his average wait time is running 2 weeks now for and individual. Keep us updated.
