Ive gone back and forth for a while on wether I want to repower or sell my boat. I think I have decided to repower at the end of the year. I’ve done plenty of research and reading on different brands. I’m coming to the OB to hear more personal opinions on brands and models.

I have a 22’ Blue Wave 220 V-Bay. The hull is in great shape, which is the main reason for the repower rather than sell. The boat does everything that I need it to do, I just don’t trust the 2-stroke HPDI that’s on it.

The two brands that I have looked at the most are Suzuki and Yamaha. Im trying to stay in the 4 cylinder class to save some weight. My current 6 cylinder 225 makes the boat sit a little arse heavy.

Currently I’m leaning towards the 200 Zuke. I haven’t decided on mechanical or FBW yet. Main reason is they are currently offering a 6 year warranty.

What motors does the OB recommend/not recommend?

Both great motors. I say go Yamaha 4 stroke only because I’ve had them and they’ve stood up well.

Maybe Kemo Sabe will chime in. Dude is on the water everyday fishing. He knows

The cost difference between the yamadog and zuke are is pretty steep. About a 3-4K difference in price.

Get a Yamaha if you want the best resale, the most options for places to service and repair it, and the best overall engine.

Get a Suzuki if you want to save 5k and are ok with a slightly less resale value, fewer options for places to service and repair it, and a great overall engine.

Buy whatever the max horsepower rating for the boat, both motors perform well.

The boat is rated for a 225 HP. I really like the weight to power ratio that the Mercs have to offer. I'm waiting to hear back on a quote for a ProXS 225.

just don't get a mercury unless you enjoy breaking down

Yamaha and Suzuki are both great engines. Suzuki will be less expensive. Just make sure there is someone local to service them wherever you live

We repowered our 23' Bay Bolt last year. We had a 250 HPDI and went back with an F300. I will say we only went with Yamaha because the dealer matched the price Suzuki quoted us for the same setup, a 300 with fly by wire controls. The original Yamaha quote was over $4K more than the Suzuki quote. Don't skimp and not get mechanical controls, you will love the difference they make. Get a quote for both and see if Yamaha will match, if not go with the suzuki.

Maybe you can find something I couldn't but the wait for a Mercury 225 was crazy long. I've heard the 4 cylinder 200 Yamaha is a pretty weak motor but I don't have any experience with it.

Please find a new merc quote, this one is getting tired.
First choice would be the v-6 225 merc proxs @400#'s and second choice would be the zuk 200 fbw in white. Haven't heard about the smaller yams availability but reports on them being weak would concern me.
Resale is a straw man argument since most of us run them until they die anyway, it's the same as buying a diesel truck because of resale but you're paying for it on the front end.

I'd wait on the new Merc v6 225. Its like 450 lbs vs. the new v8 250-300.

As for your original question, I'd take Zuk over Yammy right now.

At the end of the day, you need to pick the motor that your local guy sells and services, and has the best warranty. If you have a shop you trust, and use, then thats your engine. Not much difference otherwise.

i have a Yamaha 200 I4 on my frontier which is pretty similar to your Vbay. I top out at 50-53mph depending on load. i get 3-4 MPG depending on how hard i run it and this info is from the NMEA info gauges. Zero issues in 3 years. Its kind of loud for a 200 but sounds good Overall i like it. Its efficient and reliable.

From the speeds ive seen on other frontiers or similar sized hulls it looks like the zuke have a little more top end to them due to turning a bigger prop. The yamaha power is there for these lighter hulls. I pop up on plane quickly and it gets up and goes when mashing the throttle.
