I'm going to throw my vote in for a Canik as well...

Caniks are fine for messing around, but they are not to be trusted with your life. If you only have one pistol to trust your life to, I would highly recommend going with a more trusted manufacturer.

Please name me one LEA, OGA, or DoD department that trusts Canik for duty use...

People who depend on their firearm for a living are not reaching for Canik.

OP:

I think I understand why you posted your question. You think that the people who post here know more about handguns than you do. You're partially correct - several of the replies you received contain excellent advice. Your problem will be distinguishing the valid responses from the personal preferences expressed by people who know no more than you do.

Coincidentally, in today's blog, Greg Ellifritz covers the exact topic about which you posted. Greg is a highly respected trainer - and as he mentions, he gets to see firsthand what handguns are reliable and which are not:

I get what you are saying. I'm a huge Glock fan myself, but to say that you can't trust a Canik is pretty outlandish. They are quality guns. Now if you had a Glock and a Canik side by side and told me to pick one I would choose the Glock every time.

The argument for LEO/MIL duty guns went out the window with the Sig 320. That whole debacle really showed that these contracts are given out under serious corruption and greed.

You've obviously never spent any time with a Canik. They're fine guns...

Remember... at one time in this country every LEO and Military person and every other swinging-dick-gun-nut in this country was saying "I'd never own a plastic gun...blah blah blah..."

Now Glocks are the most popular gun in the country. Just because Canik is new to the country and not as well known in no means makes them an unreliable gun.

I have 1000's of rounds through my full size and about 500 rounds through my sub compact and haven't had a single issue.

Well they're a Turkish manufactured firearm that's imported through Century Arms in the US, but...

How about the Turkish National Police Forces?

quote:

The Turkish Government has awarded the Turkish companies Sarsilmaz and Canik two contracts resulting from the “Original Indigenous Gun Project” trials. Sarsilmaz received a 110,000 handgun order of the company’s 9x19mm SAR-9, while Canik received a 45,000 handgun order of their 9x19mm TP9SF ELITE S model. The Sarsilmaz handguns will be divided up between the Turkish Coast Guard, Naval Forces, Land Forces, and National Police. The 45,000 Canik TP9SF Elite S handguns will be solely for the Turkish National Police Forces. In the Armed Forces, these handguns will be replacing aging CZ, Beretta copies that have been locally manufactured in Turkey. As for the National Police, these Caniks will be replacing the Yavuz 16 (a Beretta copy) and the Sarsilmaz Kilinç 2000, in addition to perhaps older Canik models as well.

The M18/320 is a fine weapon. Once they fixed the drop test problem it’s g2g (lets not pretend Glock isn’t immune from recalls). I would have preferred the military went with the Glock, but empirical evidence from those at the trials showed Officers shot the 320 much more capably.

As of today I would select the following firearms in order if I had to grab something to defend my life.

G19
G43X
P320
P365

Gen 4 personally. I would say Gen 3 but the texturing on the 4 is much better stock.

If you are left handed go with a gen 5 due to the ambi slide stop. However the mag well on the 5’s are atrocious with the cut out in the front. I know it was for the MHS contract, but they should have done the cutouts one the side. On the front it hangs up mag changes on the regular.

I don’t mind the finger grooves on the gen4 but that might be another consideration to move to the 5.

I have a gen 2, 3, 4, and 5 19. I also have the 19X and 19M. You can’t go wrong with a 19 of any flavor.

And you’d trust your life on a gun that doesn’t fit a mag easily and quickly?

Interesting.

It’s a design flaw I noted. As I said I would go with a gen 4 personally. Some people like the 5 for the ambi slide stop and the match grade barrel, but you need to train to learn the muscle memory of magazine changes with that particular nuance. I only have 2k rounds through my gen 5 and primacy from the previous generations works against me with the gen 5 mag changes.

That's funny... None of the mags in my "inferior" Canik's hang up on the feed or drop.

So you'd trust your life on a gun you know has design flaws?

You Glock "sheeple" are so amusing! Nothing without the letters G, L, O, C & K will ever be considered a serviceable firearm, in your eyes.

That's a damn shame to live so close-minded.

Just so you know they have since done away with the cut out on the front for the gen 5.

I absolutely love my Canik. It’s a joy to shoot and it’s my truck gun.

My home defense pistol is a S&W SD9VE. That’s sort of the bargain basement model. It’s perfectly fine and reliable and only cost about $300. But it’s not as enjoyable to shoot as the Canik and I’m not as accurate with it. But for a basic home defense gun it’s fine.

The one that is the most comfortable, and fits the desired purpose, is the only real answer. For me, if you really want accuracy and reliability, you’re looking for a revolver. Semi-auto pistols are almost always a trade off for capacity, and reloading speed.

My most comfortable, reliable, and accurate handgun is my Ruger GP100 in .357. Pretty versatile as well, in that you can practice with .38 to save money. I carry a Glock 23 in .40 cal, because it’s nearly as reliable, and if needed I can send much more lead down range much more quickly than with my GP.

Do your homework. Narrow your choices to the more reliable handguns, then find one or several gun stores that will let you handle and maybe even shoot the ones you are interested in. It almost never fails, one will stand out to you, for some reason or another. That’s your handgun.
