Just looking for others that may be storing some food etc. Main question i wanted to ask is if it is worth it to put oxygen absorbers in before vacuum sealing beans and rice? All that shite is from china and I always see people in the reviews saying that they didnt work. Not looking to have this last 20 years, just get thru this shitty period we seem to be in.

I just want to have about 3-4 weeks of something in case there is any strikes or whatever in shipping with the vaccine mandate. Well worth the few hundred dollars worth of stuff to have on hand. Idea is to vacuum seal and throw in a 5 gal bucket and store in closet.

What are you all doing?

Not necessary for beans and rice. They will last for 2 years at least just in the package they come in.

In my opinion vacuum sealing is fine for 1-5 years storage. If you wish to maintain good quality, buy buckets and Mylar bags. Place bag in bucket, fill with rice, beans, etc. throw in a few chunks of dry ice and when it has sublimated mostly and filled the bucket with CO^2 vapor, then seal up bag. Packed like this they will be there a long time and the CO^2 helps kill off any bugs that may already be in the bean or rice.

Just my 2 cents

Hello, Mr. Fed. I intend to be fully reliant with whatever our government overlords may provision us when the Great Reset occurs.

Water is the big issue. I have access to a well but it is electric. I think if we get down to where we dont have water or electricity everyone is fricked. sugar and spice is easy and cheap. ammo im good.

For those that dont know regular canned food available everywhere can be stored indefinetly, as in for years. Expiration dates on food items are just an indication of maximum quality if used by that date, not that they are unsafe to eat.

LINK

"Food poisoning bacteria does not grow in the freezer, so no matter how long a food is frozen, it is safe to eat. Foods that have been in the freezer for months (recommended freezer times chart) may be dry, or may not taste as good, but they will be safe to eat. So if you find a package of ground beef that has been in the freezer more than a few months, don’t throw it out. Use it to make chili or tacos. The seasonings and additional ingredients can make up for loss of flavor.

What about the foods in your pantry? Most shelf-stable foods are safe indefinitely. In fact, canned goods will last for years, as long as the can itself is in good condition (no rust, dents, or swelling). Packaged foods (cereal, pasta, cookies) will be safe past the ‘best by’ date, although they may eventually become stale or develop an off flavor. You’ll know when you open the package if the food has lost quality. Many dates on foods refer to quality, not safety. See FSIS’ Shelf-Stable Food Safety fact sheet for more information.

USDA is doing its part to help consumers keep food from going to waste. The Food Safety and Inspection Service is collaborating with the Food Marketing Institute and Cornell University to update the online Foodkeeper storage guide, which contains storage information on a wide variety of foods. We are also developing a mobile application for the Foodkeeper to provide consumers with another user-friendly option to access good searchable information on food storage, proper storage temperatures, food product dating, and expiration dates. Before you throw out food from your pantry or freezer, check it out. It may be just fine!

I have about 900 gallons in cisterns and looking to add more but I need to sort out sanitizing this for drinking. Thought of getting the hanging style filters and just dumping 5-10 gallons at a time as needed. I also plan to add rabbit cages to supplement meat supply even if I never need to go radio silent this will help combat the skyrocketing grocery prices. Already have chickens

I think booze will be more valuable than food when this recession comes. That’s why I have to make sure the garage fridge is 100% full of booze, always.

At least that’s what I tell my wife.

Any of y’all know about gasification? Seems you can run a genset off the gasses from burning wood. Would def come in handy

I know it can be done, hell the germans used wood gas to power vehicles toward the end of WWII due to lack of oil. I also know it is a pain in the arse to set up the gasification contraption on a truck or car. I bought a diesel pickup truck years ago and learned how to make biodiesel. I also store a good bit of used cooking oil and regular highway diesel fuel.

I figure I can make biodiesel if and when I run out of stored diesel. It really doesn't matter how old the oil is because when you convert it to biodiesel you have to wash the mixture several times to get the contaminants out and make a better burning fuel.

You should be able to run it off a generator. If it’s a private artesian well it’s probably no more than a 5 hp submersible motor, probably smaller than that.

5 hp well requires 7500 running watts, 15,000 starting. Get an electrician to put up a transfer switch that you can plug a generator into

You can buy manual water well pumps. Google is your friend. I bought one just in case because I'm in the same situation as you. Unfortunately though, I lost all of my stored food along with my guns and ammo in a horrible boating accident.

I can run my well at my camp off of a 3000 watt easily. Not sure of the HP on the well motor but it runs it like a champ.
