I've never been fishing for smallmouth bass, but don't they have a big reputation for fighting ability?

The hardest I've fought was an AJ. Like pulling up a cinder block with a bad attitude.

I admit that I haven't fought a lot of fresh water fish. I have been hooked to a blue Marlin (Capt. approximated 400#) and an 80# yellowfin and I can say that the one fish that was a pain to reel in and we were like "wtf is this so little thing" was a permit. Seriously, how do they pull so hard?!

Hard to say. A does a big Shellcracker pull as hard as a juvenile Jack Crevalle near the same size?

Both of these will kick your arse. It's embarrassing. You see a bunch of fish busting on top and hang into something serious, you don't know what. You're all like "It's a big blackfin!". 5 minutes later a 3lb bonita comes over the side.
