Yes I know. It doesn’t change the fact that there is a need for a heavier projectile at the squad level. The problem comes in with trying to create a whole new weapon system. Instead of just procuring something like the LWRC 6.8 DI A5.

I imagine NATO commonality is far less important post-Cold War. If we were to get into a shooting war with the Russians or Chinese then I would rather have something that hits harder and further out than what they issue to their cannon fodder. The intermediate cartridge doctrine was developed when iron sights and short engagement ranges were the rule. When most infantry battles were determined by who fired the most rounds and known hit probabilities at the time, it made a lot of sense. Now that rifles are issued with optics and the range can be over 500 yds again, hit probability is way up so fewer, harder hitting bullets should be doctrine.

Was announced a little bit ago that the new cartridge is the 6.8x51. I’ll look for an article.

And 80ksi chamber pressure
Seems like the result of "lets write a really stupid PTS, nobody will bite on this" and when they do you're stuck with some drastically overcomplicated barrel roasting $5 per round blaster.
I get why they did it but shite, please be at least a tiny bit reasonable with my money.

Might as well used the 6.5 creedmore

Why not just adopt the 6.5 Grendel?
Posted on 2/2/21 at 1:40 pm to LSUlefty
The Grendel makes most sense IMO

I dont understand why they didn't. They went full retard with this thing. I'm sure it'll work great but you don't HAVE to spend the absolute maximum amount of money possible on everything.
With all these contracts Sig has been getting i wonder if they end up going down the colt path

6.8 x 51? Might as well have used the 7mm-08.

Why .277 or 6.8?
As many of you know, traditionally the best bullets are not found in .277 caliber. While a few good ones exist, most of the favorite bullets on the market are .260 caliber (6.5), .284 caliber (7mm) or .308 caliber. So why did SIG choose .277 (6.8mm)?
The answer is they didn’t. The U.S. military wants a new belt-fed machine gun and put out a contract for one. SIG entered a belt-fed machine gun hoping to win the contract. The military specified the caliber of 6.8 or .277. Of course, the military wants the cartridge lighter and more powerful so SIG began developing the .277 Fury for that contract. SIG has been selected as one of the three finalists for the contract and will be going into full production with the .277 SIG Fury for the military. The commercial market gets to reap the benefits of over two years of R&D with the cartridge for the military.

What’s Different About This Case?
The .277 SIG Fury is a three-piece cartridge. The brass part of the case encompasses the body, shoulder, and neck. The base or head of the case is stainless steel and is where most of the pressure happens. The third piece mechanically bonds the stainless base and brass body together inside the case. SIG says, “We see this as the technology of the future.”

Imagine that.
Colonel - "Hey what caliber do we want? Got a pile of .284 and .264 short action stuff to pick from that'll do around 3000 fps"
General - "needs to be .277 and doing at least 3000fps"
Colonel - "there's nothing in production that meets these specs"
General - "we got 500 gazillion taxpayer dollars to spend on this i dont give a shite it needs to be .277"
Sig Sauer - "boy have we got a badass deal for you"
