Near shore rigs in Venice advice.

Are the near shore rigs in Venice off the shelf worth/safe enough to go fishing in a 2021 xpress h22 Bay boat? If so what are the wind conditions/directions i need to stay within so I don't end up putting myself in danger. I'm looking to catch some blue water/reef fish as close to shore as possible. How shore off the tip of Venice do I need to go?

If you are targeting snapper, go to East Bay through Bayou Joseph. Hit 45' mark and start dropping. Mangroves will be on top and small red down. Rig hop out to the 80-100' mark and chances go up. Or you can hit rigs right off end of SW pass in deeper water for AJ's and maybe some broomtails.

What makes an xpress not be able to go to the rigs?

The lack of transom and gunnel height.
Pick your days and watch weather closely and you should be fine.

Okay, sorry, I thought you were just hating on the boat brand. Thats the main reason I'm asking because of the transom and gunnel heights. I don't wanna go out their and get swamped. I'm asking what would be good conditions so that won't be a problem.

If you have to ask these questions you don't need to go. Go out with somebody else to see what you will be facing. It would have to be VERY calm conditions for that boat to go 20-30 miles off shore.

I don't want to go more than 3-5 miles off shore.

Fuel range will be an issue as well. Its a long run from the launch to the gulf. You'll need to watch it.
You'll be fine on a good day. If the forecast is calling for any seas other than 0, stay in.

The boat has a 35 gallon tank i believe.

You should know your range. Things offshore are deceptively far apart and you can burn a whole lot of gas rig hopping.
If you haven't been offshore much, its a good idea to go with someone else before taking an xpress out there. That isn't a very seaworthy boat. Be careful, lots of rock jetties, sandbars, crew boats, etc. Out there.
Be safe and have fun

Reminds me of this pic I took at MC109. Woof.

There aren't any good conditions for running the river in a low freeboard boat. Plenty of freighters and crew boats that will sink you before you know what's happening. Take a charter first so you can learn and appreciate what it takes to fish out of Venice down the river.
Don't mean to be negative, this question comes up a lot and my reply is always the same. It can be very dangerous down there, even for the experienced.

I'd rather launch in MS and fish east of the river in LA waters than launch out of Venice in a tin bay boat. I just ordered a tin bay boat this week, so I don't have anything against them.

Is SW pass even safe to run right now?
Posted on 10/14/20 at 5:59 am to greenhead11
SW pass is always safe to run minus the ship traffic. It's the main shipping lane the corps actually keeps it dredged, you have to watch the edges as many of the wooden weirs are not visible anymore but there but it's the easiest to run of all the passes IMO.
To the OP, near shore rigs and off the shelf don't quite compute for me. I may be wrong but I have always felt off the shelf were more floaters and they are quite a ways out and not do able with a 35 gallon tank. The east bay rigs, whats left in west bay, and the MP rigs are do able however you still have to pick your days and be careful with fuel economy as others have said it's easy to run farther than you think looking at rigs in the distance.

Some good advice and overly cautious advice in this thread. Hammer been fishing out of venice forever so his is in the good category. Knowing your boat and how to address any issues that can come up is the biggest issue. Sea tow membership is key too.
We have a 21' express bay boat and a camp down river. Been fishing out of the camp for almost 20 years. The rigs off the end of pass a loutre are about 8 miles out and are 120'-160' deep. Rigs out of southeast pass are about the same depth. Rigs out of south pass, cant run south pass anymore so take another route, are about 12 miles and 250' of water. We go out all the time to those rigs and catch fish. You shouldn't go on 3'-4' days but 1'-2' days are fine. You just have to be prepared to turn around when you get to the end of the pass and the seas are too big that day. We've been out when we shouldn't have been and we've turned around plenty of times too. Remember, people used to go out in the gulf/ocean in canoes with outriggers and they survived.

OP, if you go, go with a buddy boat. Offshore can go to crap very fast.
Do you have a radio? That is a must. Also once offshore, you have other gear that the CG requires you to have on board. Check the regs.
Oh, Had saw a dumb arse out on the Midnight lumps in a Flat bottom boat before.

So in your opinion, what pass should I go out of to catch amberjack and red snapper assuming its a super flat day? And which bay/depth would be best?
