Hard to even think about the days of fishing with just a compass and a rig chart.

man, i remember that. only gear we had on the boat then was a sack phone, compass, handful of maps, and a flare kit. nothing like being in your early 20's and 30+ miles out in the gom in a 21' baypro.

4 pages and no mention of how shitty our rubber boots were when we were kids?
Since buying a kayak, I have fished more than I ever have. Love the flexibility of being able to go almost anywhere and go by myself. Standing up in a yak has been a bonus.

Obvious answer would be a fishing rod and reel; I find those to be indispensable!
But the less obvious answer, to me, would be a cast net. No more waiting to buy bait at the shops at 5am and then rushing to get out to the spot for the morning bite!
Long sleeved shirts, long pants and buffs are pretty good things to have as well. For years I fished in cotton Tshirts and shorts. . . gnats and horseflies were unbearable and you were guaranteed to come home with a sunburn. So nice now that that doesn't happen!

In 50 years of duck hunting the greatest innovation has been the spinning wing decoy. Thermocel, GPS, 4 wheelers, trail cameras, and flukes are a close 2nd..

Hands down, for me, it was a Zebco 33. No more cane poles. I was in high cotton...
