B’ham, Alabama. Up until last year one would walk up to the window in the pistol permit office, complete a form, wait 5 mins, pay $7.50, walk out with permit.

Today, it’s an online request instead. I have a 5 yr permit so I’ll be going online to renew in a few years.

Mine was:

Fill out application on Tuscaloosa County sheriffs website.

Click submit.

Answer phone 2 days later that everything was in order and for me to stop by the office to get picture made.

Paid $100 for 5 years. ($20\year)

(Alabama just announced a lifetime for $300. Ill do that as soon as this one expires next year)

Do not do this if you intend to use your permit in lieu of NICS checks for firearms purchases. A permit must be renewed at least every five years to be used for this purpose.

If you don't care, full speed ahead.

Not all stores let you do this.

Two years ago I renewed mine with a lifetime.

TN doesn’t have NICS that I’m aware.

NICS is federal. National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

Mine

Took Renewal class 12-16-20 and submitted online same day.

I didn’t hear anything by 2-1-21 so I emailed LSP. I received an acceptance email a few hours later with payment link. Paid and received mine in the mail 10 days later.

Anyone doing a renewal that is over 30 days email them.

No Alabama stores do it currently as far as I know. Some sheriff was passing out pistol permits like candy and I guess the FBI made every firearm purchase have to through NICS. Not sure when or if that will end.

What I should say is that whether you have a concealed carry permit or not, you must have a background check in TN

I didn't realize it earlier, but Alabama's permits do not meet the requirements. I guess that makes the point moot for the guy who wanted to get a lifetime permit.

Not every state's permits are accepted in lieu of NICS. I think it's something like half that are. Also, a store can refuse to accept a permit.

You should refuse to do business with those stores.

I think Alabama stopped doing that. Because some (corrupt) sheriffs were writing CCL's for people who were felons, and not supposed to carry or possess a firearms

Sheriffs in rural counties are sometimes pretty corrupt. I have a friend who is a retired FBI agent and I think over his 20 years at the bureau he arrested 4-5 sheriffs in Alabama alone.
