On the rare occasion that I’m actually early enough (on time), I use one of those red cap lights.

Or if your light goes out in pitch darknesses after being dropped off. Then you smell and hear pigs.

I always use a light. Stepping on a stick or limb alerts everything in the woods that nothing small did this.

usually wait until I shite before the morning hunt, so often I’m walking in right at legal shooting time

Damn. I get up at 4AM to have my caffeine, breakfast and shite before heading to the woods. I like to be in the woods a good 30-45 mins before first light

frickin’ overachiever. This a great formula to fall asleep before daybreak and miss the prime window.

Hardly ever deer hunt in the morning. For turkeys I try to use a red light and try not to use any light if I don’t have to. But once it is late enough in the season for snakes to be active I will use whatever light I need to see a path.

I use a Petzl headlamp on red setting walking in and out.

Every animal around would be able to smell me after that. And that would create quite the squishy seat for that hunt.

I can normally make it the three steps from my bike to the bottom of the ladder without a light.

a few years ago, i had a buddy that would take me on a few trips to his dad's place and we always met back at the truck at dark/night time.

that walk was always the creepiest walk. my imagination was going off all the time.

it was almost like walking around Chicago at night time.

Walking under a bunch of roosted turkeys will alert the whole neighborhood when they fly off like a bunch of Apache helicopters in the night. That'll make you shite if you didn't already by the truck.

I use a small pin light as low to the ground as possible. I'd rather walk in with a light than fumble around breaking sticks I can't see or falling into a mud hole. Never shine above parallel to the ground.

mile walk plus and I only use a green light. I don't want to get shot by some yahoo. No one usually hunts back where I go, but there are the occasional duck hunters that slip in real early along the sloughs. Public land so I don't trust anyone.

I walked into a covey of pigs with a red light on. Nah, not wanting to relive that again.

I always do, aimed directly at the ground. Too much shite to step on, trip over, etc. I find I am much quieter with a small light pointed where I step.

I always use a headlamp (and carry a spare). Typically walk in most of the way with white then switch to green for the last 100-200 yards. I'm usually walking in a half mile or more. I've done green the whole way and it's fine, but I can be quieter with a white light as I can see sticks and obstacles better in order to avoid them.
