I'll use a flashlight pretty much every time when walking in the dark. The exceptions being a late enough morning arrival where it is light enough to see or the stand is close enough to a road on the property to walk without tripping and falling. If I am walking a public access road, I am always using a flashlight to not get run over.

About a decade ago I was walking across a year old cutover, head down, scouting for sign, and I busted a covey at my feet.

Died.

Once I pounded on my chest enough to restart my heart and convinced my fight or flight response to stop swinging at imaginary demons, I was finally able to calm down.

Took two more steps . . . and busted up the other half of the covey . . . I'm still not sure how I am alive.

Damn. I get up at 4AM to have my caffeine, breakfast and shite before heading to the woods. I like to be in the woods a good 30-45 mins before first light

I get up at 3am for work 4-5 days a week, and am drinking coffee by 330. Alarm goes off at 4am at the camp and make a pot. Regardless when I wake up somewhere between 545-615 I’m finding a toilet.

I have walked to within 15 of deer while coon hunting using a white headlight. Never seemed to bother them.

When I run in the dark I use a blue light because it's brighter and makes me more visible, and in this one spot I cut through I see deer sometimes. Once I looked over along the creek and there were at least 8 pairs of eyes staring at me from about my height, reflecting back a little blue. Kinda eerie.

Green or red cap light but I hold it pointed down, not on my cap. I feel like it would be harder to see than the bright light bouncing around on my head.

I also go in early. If sunrise is at 6am (not official time but when it starts getting light) I will leave the truck around 5am. I walk slowly and fairly long distance, usually at least 350 yards from truck.

Well any of my 7 stands are between 70 and 300 yards from my back door and I know every inch of my woods so usually moonlight. If I need light then I have a headlamp that has a red light as the default and that is what I turn on. Can use white light but you have to cycle to that.

If there is snow on the ground and moonlight, it is almost like daytime.
