Anyone following this story? Couple of guys, well seasoned on the water, firefighters, and military, leave out on Friday morning for a quick trip 30 miles offshore, and don't show back up that evening.

Starts off with USCG SAR effort, and has expanded into a significant public and private effort, still ongoing.

They found a bag from the boat, but nothing else. Crazy to think, with today's technology, a decent boat (mid-20s Robablo), and the close distance to the shore, they've not found any other signs.

I’ve been following. Check out the thread on Hull Truth:
Hull Truth Missing Boaters

One of the missing boaters’ brother-in-law started the thread and posts updates often.

Hundreds of personal boats are assisting.

I’m reading these guys had no epirb on board to not be found yet. How anybody who fishes the Gulf Stream of all places and doesn’t have this tool is beyond my understanding.

my folks live right next to the port there. talked to my dad this evening while he was on his walk and he was walking through the port and the family has a tent setup there and they're just hanging out trying to stay positive. hard to imagine what could have happened. i havent seen that there was any serious weather offshore that day. i guess its possible theyre floating around on the boat somewhere with dead phones/no service but that seems unlikely. i cant imagine going 30 miles into the atlantic without a radio.

Really sad situation. Definitely hoping they get found soon and not trying to criticize, but I'll never understand why people will go in unprotected waters without a PLB or EPIRB. Situations like this could be easily resolved in under an hour if people would just spend the $300 on the right safety equipment.

They had a VHF antenna as seen in some pictures, so they likely had a VHF radio. Apparently there were some strong storms the afternoon they went out.

It’s easy to criticize these guys but I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve taken chances a couple times. These guys were experienced on the water and reportedly only intended a short trip. As I’ve gotten older, and learned how fast everything can change, I measure my risks more and advise others to do the same. But a few years ago (and I’m thinking of a specific day while I type this) I could have gotten rolled without having any reliable safety or tracking equipment on board and been gone without a trace.

Rather than criticize these guys and their risks, take care of yourselves and your families and be thankful for the opportunity to learn from the hardships of others.

We all have, anyone who says otherwise either hasnt been out there much or is lying. Nobody on this board has only been out with a full arsenal of everything available. How many of yall have a life raft on the center console?

Some people dont realize a vhf is a line of sight communication only. If you hit the oh shite button 20+ miles from anybody who is listening then nobody will hear it.

I have a vhf with DSC and AIS and I go out with just that, but I will have an eprib next year. I dont go far enough to worry about being out of LOS of another vessel though

I’ve been following the story obsessively since I found out Friday night. I live in the area and mainly fish out of Port Canaveral. This story hits so close to home, it’s definitely got me building a list of equipment to add to my boat to be better prepared.

Initially reports were that they fished 30 miles offshore, but then everyone said their float plan was to fish the 8A reef. I fish there often, it’s very popular and is only about 15 miles out, just outside of cellphone range and easily within VHF range.

I have seen reports that say they did not have a VHF on board, but that didn’t come from a family member so I’m not sure how true it is.

I've been following non stop since Sunday. I was listening to the radio online when there was a report from a civilian plane of a vessel matching the exact description of the missing boat not throwing a wake. When CG got to the cords it was just some balloons. I got "excited" at the report and then was disappointed to hear that it was not a boat, I can't imagine the ups and downs that the family is going through with all the reports coming in.

According to the thread on THT a raft has been found with 2 persons aboard.

I don't know how valid this information is but a couple have posted they heard the CG radio transmission. Not my information.

They spotted a raft East of Brunswick. They said possibly persons in the water which is SOP when they find something like that. No confirmation of souls in a raft.
