Ill echo what most have said. A few different options i've seen and seems like a no brainer as far as simplicity but still good quality.
- Turtlebox
- Ecogear Defender is comparable sound quality wise as a Turtlebox and a couple hundred dollars cheaper
-Waterproof soundbar like Wetsounds you can mount to the grab rail on the console and run a wire to the battery for power.

CP3, Kinda off topic but have you ever considered filming videos of you rewiring boats for YouTube? I’ve seen your work posted here and could watch videos like that for hours.

JL Audio M6 speakers and subs
JL amps. I have the older series and have had zero issues with mine.

The stereo in my boat is almost 10 years old and it seems the sub has a short so I’m thinking of just replacing everything.
So your question becomes...
1) do I want to replace old busted speaker on my boat with new speakers?
If so, then upgrade to JL audio marine.
or
2) am I fine with old busted speakers still on my boat that don't work.
Then get a turtlebox.
I like the turtle box fine, but I'm the type that if I have them there (installed) I want them working.

Another vote for JL, if you want the best quality marine speaker made buy the M6 line. I ran Wet Sounds for years, they went to crap about 7 or 8 years ago.

It really just depends on how much you want to spend and/or how good you want it to sound.
Top tier (IMO):
- Rockford Fosgate M2 series speakers
- JL M6 series speakers
Mid tier:
- Rockford Fosgate M0 series speakers
- JL M3 series speakers
- Kicker speakers
Budget:
- Skar speakers are actually pretty good for the price. I would almost put them in mid tier. Ran a pair of 8” in a system with some JL M6 speakers and they were comparable in loudness, not quite as clear but still sounded good enough and are SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper. They need a good bit of power though.
If you want to actually hear any of these while running you’re gonna want to power them with an amp though. I like fusion amps the most. JL and Rockford are good too. If you don’t care that much about sound quality you can probably go with cheaper options as long as you match it to power needed by speakers.
This is the definitive reply, with one caveat. I respect the hell out of CP3s opinions, but the new Kicker M-Class are absolutely on par with Rockford M2 and JL M6. They are significantly better than previous Kicker models.
You'll want 200 watts going to all the top quality 8" speakers. You're leaving a lot on the table with anything less.
Super budget friendly option is Skar speakers with NVX amp. IMO those NVX amps are good with a very good price.

Buy two turtle boxes. Bullet proof and you can use them for other things.

I have a, wet sounds stereo, 2 wetsounds 8in zero speakers, 1 8in JL speaker and 4 JL 5in speakers hooked up on 2 amps. It sounds great.

I just redid mine last winter. Went with 6 kicker 6.5”, kicker marine head unit, skar 4 channel marine amp. Did it all myself. Very happy with it.

I’ve thought about it a few times. I honestly just don’t feel like doing the editing on the backend after it’s all done.
That being said, I’m going to be rigging out a 47ft Freeman a little over a year from now. It’s coming as basically a naked hull straight from Freeman. That would probably be a good one to film if I decided to start making videos
