What does it matter the method the fish are taken as long as you follow limit/size regulations

If you are burning through those shallow ponds in the marsh a lot then it will force fish to find somewhere else to be. If you are in a bay boat or skiff then you are most likely using a trolling motor in those areas instead of mud motors

Can't speak to Louisiana but up here in Arkansas there are no limits on roughfish. Shooting a mess of gar, bowfin (choupique for the LA baws), and native suckers is not good for a body of water.

Carp are another story but most can't identify a carp from buffalo.

Bow fishing is the main problem

I know it's not the Gulf, but I had the worst day on the water in 3 months on Lake Texoma.
Had to work to catch 4 stripers.

So I went to a catfish hole and caught a decent amount of fiddler size cats.

I would really like to know what the actual percentage of reds taken each year are with a bow out of the total amount taken.

I would bet that it doesn't break single digits.

Go drive over the leeville bridge on a Saturday night and see if you still believe that.

Because we are the only dumb arse state to allow it when it should have never happened in the first place

Get rid of the mud boats and airboats and I am ok with bow fishing. The problem is that these style boats can now go where others were not able to before and it puts not only a dent in the population through harvest, but it also runs them out of the (shallow) ponds through agitation.

Mud boats and duck hunting are another conversation...

I also think it's hurt duck populations. No where to roost if constantly being ran off by nighttime bow fishers.
doesn't affect population, but it affects where they stay... enough times and they don't return. actually the reason several areas got gated off

I was there for the gill net ban / boat launch blocking / hwy blocking days.
Notice they quit that shite for teal and duck season

Fair enough. Bad word composition on my part. But I'd say the demise of Delacroix / hopedale has certainly been because so many new bow fishing outfits run through those ponds. Most of that marsh can't be gated off, so to say. There are other issues, as well. Zero nighttime enforcement, and no way to know who's running through who's land / leases.

How excited would anyone be if they pulled up to their duck pond only to notice an airboat had been shooting redfish all night. No ducks will be there... and undersized reds will be afloat.

I’ve noticed it has gotten bad with redfish population the last few years. I grew up in the Venice area and there were tons of redfish growing up, even during the gill net days. Venice was pretty much a haven for redfish. You could pretty much catch them on any point out in the bays. Now it’s tough to catch a limit.

If you are saying this.... then I believe it.... We also have caught fewer reds this summer. I did notice reds got harder to catch/find during the blackened redfish craze, then after regulations it got easier(never like it was before though).

a couple of things 40 years ago, NOBODY was fishing 7 days a week, marinas were mostly empty on weekdays. NOBODY was fishing the shallow ponds year round, now its easier than ever to get there. More and more fisherman every year- UNLIKE hunting.

pogie boats and declining habitat

I would say it has to do with.

Habitat loss.
River levels.
Insane number of charter boats fishing every day. Even though most are notlicensed or insured for louisiana.
People driving from God knows where to catch a fish then drive home the same day.
Then maybe bowfishing.

Regardless of how you feel about bowfishing, I can't imagine the number of boats bowfishing is more than a fraction of the boats fishing during the day. Won't argue with scaring them out of ponds or moving them around all day/night, but actual take surely can't hold a candle to rod/reel take.

My favorite fishing is shallow water , top water lure, catch and release 80 per of time for red fish.

Grand Lake south of lake Arthur is full of redfish. They have moved further north is what I’ve heard. They are catching them in lake Arthur. Just a shift

I said change the limits. 5 -> 3 would be an immediate 40% reduction in harvests

That’s not how any of this works…

Everyone would have to limit out at 5 every time for a 3 fish limit to reduce harvest by 40%. If that was the case, we wouldn’t be discussing tje need for changes.

There are plenty of spawning redfish offshore “feeding” the population; but the dearth of 16”-27” fish is something ldwf needs to address.

Things run in cycles. The openings of the Spillway, the oil spill, and the hurricanes have hurt fishing. The trout seem to be coming back, but Mardi Gras pass needs to be closed. The guy with the Carolina Skiff who is on YouTube is always crushing redfish in the Biloxi Marsh.

Yep. Not long ago, people were bitching about trout. Everyone's catching trout this year and no bitching. Now it's redfish...
