Helluva post there TaserTiger. I think he was confusing the Old River Control structure, which leads into the Atchafalaya River and was undermined in 1973, with Morganza. I think they are probably going to have to open Morganza this time, given the levels. Was in Cocodrie this weekend, and on the way back checked out the Atchafalaya at Morgan City. They have 10'-15' high concrete floodwalls along the river, and it looks like they have openings that they would fit something to block them, but I would not want to live there when the water gets high. Looks like the spillway connects back with the Atchafalaya around where the split to Whisky Bay pilot channel and the River, so all that water will be back in the river above Morgan City.

The Miss River is forecasted to hit 48ft here in Memphis on the 10th. Flood stage is 34 ft. The highest on record was 48.7 ft in 1934 (I believe).

Weathermen are saying it could be very well be higher than 48.7 with the rain from the weekend and forecasted rain next week.

Am I the only one who thinks that they will completely loose the Morganza gates if they open them? I would take a stab in the dark here and say all the timbers holding the structure up are rotten.

I doubt the corps of engineers would allow that

WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge is reporting that Governor Bobby Jindal has ordered a partial evacuation of Angola State Penitentiary starting next Monday because of rising water along the Mississippi River.

The station says the initial evacuation would involve only “medically fragile inmates” though a larger evacuation could be ordered later.

Absolutely. I plan to bring the bateau and tie off on the backside to catch some barfish. My 25 yamaha should easily get us thru that minimal current.

If they were able to open and close it in '73, I see no reason why they can't do it again now.
