Same here but the further he went the less sense it made to me

The way he made it sound was that Morgan City and all the towns in the basin would be flooded only if the spillway is opened. Spillway opened or failure of the ORCS it doesn't matter, the water ends up in the same place.

Going back and reading his posts I think he believes if the ORCS failed that the water would go somewhere other than down the Atchafalaya. Does he not know that the two rivers are connected at the ORCS? That is the only explanation I can come up with for his reasoning.

I'm not sure what he's thinking. But I do know it's pretty scary to think that if any of these 3 dams fail, the Atchafalaya will be the new major outlet of the Mississippi and there isn't a damn thing we can do to stop it

The Mississippi's on the left side of the dams, Atchafalaya on the right.

You can see in the closest one where the force of the water kinda eroded out the sides for the last 100 yards or so before the dam

Actually there are four stuctures in that pic. The closest one is the hydroelectic plant that was built in 1985. The next one going up is the over bank stucture, then the low sill structure(the one that almost failed in 73), than the last one kinda to the right is the auxillary structure.

Nice pic. I didn't realize all those structures were that close together. If anyone has not seen this in person, it's worth the drive from anywhere in Louisiana. The amount of water flowing through there is amazing.

I see it now. I was wondering which one almost failed in '73. You know a lot about this place eh?

At some point the ORCS will be bested by the river. It might not be soon, but invariably you have to think it will happen. The river isn't going to be tamed forever when it keeps trying to take the path it wants to take. When I read Rising Tide I figured maybe we would see 1973/1927 type river levels in our lifetimes, but I never would have predicted it would only be a few short years later.

I've never been, but I plan on making the drive someday

I thought it was near where I sometimes fish but couldn't make heads from tails trying to figure out how I got there by vehicle (North/South).

I put in near a Corps of Eng lock and dam deal with a pilot channel of some sort connecting Atchafalya to Miss.

If I drive a couple of miles farther there is a hydro plant.

You must put in somewhere right here (near the arrow)

It's a little south of the hydroelectric plant of the ORCS

And to better answer your question from earlier, here's where the Bonnet Carre spillway is

It's between Montz and Norco from the Mississippi (bottom) to Lake P (top)

You are prolly correct. I DO KNOW it's almost due South. When the Mississippi is up we launch in a pasture (least I used to but no longer have a 4X4). Normally we can use a cement launch farther down. Open to public and some people camp in campers.

Yea if you zoom out a little bit at that spot on google maps It's a lock on a small channel between the Mississippi and Atchafalaya, and it's directly south of the ORCS and directly west and almost exactly in line with the Mississippi/Louisiana state line before it turns north/south at the Mississippi River. I've never really been that way, one day I want to make a drive up past the ORCS and all just to see it all. I also want to make the drive down the river as far as I can go til the road ends. I think it would be cool to see.

Yes, I recognize that Island in the Mississippi. DO NOT set lines on the back (south) side of that thing. Have NEVER caught a fish there, in fact after setting a few lines there on a couple of different trips I stay away completely.

if the mississippi changes course I guess this wont bode well for my father in laws camp on the bank of the atchafalaya by i-10.

already a year or two ago a camp across the river lost about 6 acres of bank. it just collapsed into the river.
