Story is the landowner wanted them gone, but damn. Pretty messed up if they really just left them there to rot after. But I'm also reading they cleaned them and took all the meat. Who knows. Either way pretty crazy they've been down there to begin with.

Ok, this is weird.

First of all, why are there water buffalo in venice? And secondly, why leave it to rot? I mean there has to be some good meat on that beast. Surely there's alot you could do with it.

The thing could've been field dressed like an elk or something and just tossed into the back of a truck.

I edited the post. Its facebook so who knows what the story really is. Other people are saying they cleaned it.

Either way pretty crazy lol. But there definitely are/were a few (non-native) random water buffalo that live around south pass.

shouldn't be illegal as it is non-native species.

Private land , non native animals equals livestock, kill as you please

Was it private land?. If it is not do the rules change?

Not sure I'd be posting pictures of that. Didn't seem to run when the first one was shot...I think cows would have at least moved a little...just saying.

I seem to remember after Katrina there were a lot of exotics got loose from a private owners place down there. Are these leftovers/offspring from those? I can remember people finding dead elk, and buffalo on the levees.

The reason they are there is because the landowner released them.
Where they were is not accessible by truck so not just like you can drive up to them.
As to wasting them it’s funny how people will say it’s a waste to not haul that cow in but would not have a problem with wasting 20 nutrias, coons, or pigs!!
I can’t confirm but I would be willing to bet the owner did not give permission for them to be shot

Anyone know the law on exotics? For instance if my neighbor has a high fence with exotics and a storm comes and tears down there fence and I’m hunting and a Sitka deer, elk, water buffalo, etc walks out. Can I shoot it?

Invasive, non-native species do not have a specific hunting season on private land.

That being said, if they break out of your neighbors fence due to an "act of God" you might get in trouble for destruction of property. (Maybe, depends how well owner is tied in with local politics).

I’m not really sure. If someone owns cattle, horses or even a dog and said animal gets loose and hit by a car, the animals owner is liable for damages. So in my mind, the animal owner is responsible for the whereabouts of the animal. I don’t know if it means 100 you can just shoot it, but it seems like it leans that way to me.

Depends on circumstances and local (Parish) law.

Not sure if there is a difference in domesticated livestock VS exotics on civil liability but I know if my cows get out and start eating your foodplot you can’t shoot it whereas exotic game escapes are fair game

Liability for damage caused by livestock when breaking out and destruction of property (killing livestock/property) are two completely different legal problems. Just because it broke out would not justify it. (IMO)

Would be like comparing apples to oranges by trying to justify destroying property with liability if your animal if it broke out. One is intentional (killing) and one is likely negligence (livestock breaking out).

Wasn’t there a case in LA a couple years ago where someone shot a huge buck that escaped from a high fence ranch and the owners were suing the guy for the price of the buck?

What ever happened with that case?

Was that the guy on the waverunner? Hunting laws still apply to private property. High fence or not.
